Description:

KCometen4 is an OpenGL KDE screensaver. Inside a box is a nifty light show that features lightning and exploding comets. It lets you configure various effects like comet behavior, camera movement, box face images, etc.

Changelog:

Version 1.0.8
* Remove legacy configure script.
* Fix a few compiler warnings and an error that prevented compilation with clang.

 kcometen hangs

by colokalle on: Jul 1 2009

Score 50%

Kubuntu 9.04 (KDE 4.3 beta)

when screen locks, kcometen runs. The first time it runs, everything is normal...unlock screen dialog appears and password returns to desktop.

The second time it runs, kcometen looks fine as a screensaver, but moving the mouse to get an unlock screen dialog locks everything up. The only way out is a hard reset.

Is there something that can be done to avoid this?

Kalle

I haven't seen that before. Using KDE 4.2.4 here. What happens when you use another KDE OpenGL screen saver like Euphoria or KRotation?

some days it seems like the open source community is the only thing that works right.

Tried using Euphoria. Same thing happened.

Turned compositing off. Euphoria worked. And kcometen too.

I'll explore on Kubuntu or KDE to see if this is a known issue.

Thank you.

I've got this happening on openSUSE too ... with KDE 4.3 (trunk) so it must be OpenGL issue.

 nice

nice screensaver, it looks really good. it's my favourite one. One feature request: it would be great if the desktop wouldn't be just a picture, but would be shown in real time. Is this possible to realise?

The Screensaver from Compiz-Fusion do have this function.

That would be an interesting feature. Thanks for mentioning it.

This might be a bit difficult with the current code, though. The Compiz Fusion screensaver is basically a window manager plugin that uses libxss. I suspect I'd need to do something similar: make a version of KCometen4 that's a KWin effect. Would it play nicely with libkscreensaver? No idea.

I'll look into it further when I get a chance. If you see a nicer way, or if you have patches, I'd be happy to see them.

Installed Kubuntu 9.10.
"./configure" fails with message:

CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake-2.6/Modules/FindKDE4.cmake:84 (MESSAGE):
ERROR: cmake/modules/FindKDE4Internal.cmake not found in
/home/gigi/.kde/share/apps;/usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings/kde4-profile/default/share/apps;/usr/share/kde4/apps
Call Stack (most recent call first):
CMakeLists.txt:3 (find_package)

Any clue ?
Thanks a lot in advance

It looks like you don't have all the devel packages installed. Try:

apt-get install kdebase-workspace-dev libqt4-opengl-dev

I think binary packages are also available in Ubuntu universe.

 desktop grab with copmpiz

by Camberwell on: Oct 15 2009

Hi there,

Compliments to the author of this great screensaver

I wonder if someone can help me, if I use kwin as my window manager the screensaver shows my desktop in the cube fine, but if I use compiz all I see is the comets in a black background, it doesn't grab a desktop shot.

well actually it does, but only maybe 1 in 10 times, most of the time it doesn't, and the background is just black, its quite strange.

Is there a fix/workaround for this little issue??

Someone else had a similar problem back in May, but I haven't been able to reproduce it.

Try this. Edit kglcometen4.cpp:135 so it looks like this:

qglClearColor(QColor(Qt::transparent));

and recompile. Does anything change?

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply, sorry I took so long, but that doesn't fix it

I'm using Fedora and this screensaver is in the rpm repo's, I originally had yum installed it, but I thought first I'd try to build it from source, and still the same thing happens.

Then I did make uninstall and re unzgip'ed the package into a new folder and made the changes you suggested to kglcometen4.cpp and rebuilt, but it still doesn't fix it :(

sorry

Oh I should also mention that its fine in the preview aswell, I get a desktop grab in the preview, its only when I wait for X amount of minutes and it kicks in automatically that I dont get a desktop grab and it displays comets on a black background, I suspect there is a box in there its just black because the camera still pans about

Yeah. I wasn't very optimistic that the change would help, but it was worth a shot. I doubt that this is even an issue in KCometen4 itself. Would you mind PM'ing me with info on various versions that you're using? (specifically compiz, kde, qt) I'll take a closer look when I get a chance.

There's a rpm that works like a charm in Mandriva 2010 too.

Fantastic Screensaver!
