Description:

KCometen4 is an OpenGL KDE screensaver. Inside a box is a nifty light show that features lightning and exploding comets. It lets you configure various effects like comet behavior, camera movement, box face images, etc.

$~/Desktop/install/kcometen4-1.0/build$ sudo make install

make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.

I have all of the development packages and pre-requisites mentioned and followed the instructions in the INSTALL.

I'm running Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4.1.

Am I doing something wrong?

Not sure. I don't have this problem on my end. What happens if you just try 'make install' without sudo? Do you still get the same error?

If so, tar up:
build/CMakeCache.txt
build/CMakeFiles/
build/cmake*
build/Makefile
and send them too me.

I'll see what I can come up with.

I tried it again just to make sure I wasn't crazy and it looks like I'm missing a GL component of QT, qgl.h.

I'm not sure where to get this thing - here's my log file from the make:

I installed libqt4-opengl-dev and got past that last problem, now I have a new one. :)

libkfile is in kdelibs5-dev. You should also have kdebase-workspace-dev installed too.

I assume you already have those or you probably wouldn't have gotten that far.

What if you rm -rf build and start fresh?

Same thing... I attached a log beneath. After this, I also tried

sudo apt-get install kdelibs5-dev kdebase-workspace-dev --reinstall

Then I rm -rf build again and ran cmake and make again. Same results there too.

Hi

Under archlinux it compiled and installed without any problem.
But it does not work: in the preview I get nothing, and when clicking on the setup button, it does not open any dialog window, so there is no configuration possible.

The install shows this in the console:

It means it does not install kcometen4.kss because when opening the console and typing
kcometen4.kss --setup
I get:

When cmake finishes I get:

(this line is in red: )Linking CXX executable kcometen4.kss

You're right. It looks like I'll need to update the install directions.

When you run cmake, try this instead:
cmake .. -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/local

Does that fix it?

I used kcometen in kde3 and now i am very glad to have it "back" in kde4.

Not sure right now. What distro/version are you using, and what KDE4 dev packages do you have installed?

I hope to release a .01 release soon that will take care of these build problems.

it's very slow on my intel graphics card, maybe you should add some option in the configuration dialog.
to make it run I had to edit the file cometen3.cpp
I commented out some lines like this:

With those lines commented out I don't notice a difference in the quality of the comet tails. Do you?

however all seems as it should be, I like it :)

I suppose that the problem with intel cards it's in the last 3 lines:
glPointParameterfARB(GL_POINT_FADE_THRESHOLD_SIZE_ARB, 60.0);
glPointParameterfARB(GL_POINT_SIZE_MIN_ARB, 0.0);
glPointParameterfARB(GL_POINT_SIZE_MAX_ARB, 1000.0);

about this I found a discussion at gamedev.net

can you notice some difference in comets' size disabling those lines?

Perhaps. Looking more closely at the problem, it seems that a number of people have difficulties when GL_POINT_SMOOTH is enabled while using Intel (and some other) drivers.

I'll send you a link to a test tarball when I get a chance.

maybe I've found something interesting...
there's a demo included in mesa that use those extensions (you can find the source here http://www.sfr-fresh.com/unix/misc/MesaDemos-7.1.tar.gz:a/Mesa-7.1/progs/demos/spriteblast.c).
if I try to run it I get a message in the console and the demo doesn't start:
Sorry, this demo requires GL_ARB_point_sprite.

so definitely my graphics card doesn't support GL_ARB_point_sprite :F

the code that detect the presence of those extensions in the demo is the following:

if (!glutExtensionSupported("GL_ARB_point_sprite")) {
printf("Sorry, this demo requires GL_ARB_point_sprite.\n");
exit(0);
}
if (!glutExtensionSupported("GL_ARB_point_parameters")) {
printf("Sorry, this demo requires GL_ARB_point_parameters.\n");
exit(0);
}

maybe you can adapt it

sorry kcometen use only GL_ARB_point_parameters and it appears that intel support this
