Description:

This is a mockup for the new Ubuntu release Intrepid Ibex. If you like the designs please please email the Ubuntu design team to try to get a move on with moving Ubuntu into the 21st century. If you don't like some of the things on the design, please comment, i feel moving these kind of designs needs be a real community effort.

The clock on the right is from Screenlets, the dock is AWN, media player is Songbird, the music updater box on the right is only a mockup, hope that can keep you for the moment!

What does that mean? I really like this mockup. It does a lot of things that most mockups don't do.

For one, Its feasible. Someone could build this theme in a few days, if that.

Also, it adheres to the general style and direction of Ubuntu.

But most importantly, it brings a new and modern look to Ubuntu.

Cheers, i was just thinking that myself. I think maybe it was a little silly making it ubuntu specific in this arena although thats what it was designed for, it could work equally well for any distro.

:)

The only thing you'd have some trouble with is the rounded menus :)

you could go pixmap, but the shadows will be upset, I think.

If you replace "Ubuntu" by "Gnome" , i think many people could vote "Good".

Since 94 , this is the first time i see this sort of "Distro-Mania" & this
propaganda.

Just imagine if all the distro do the same ... :(

You know, the desktop showed on this mockup already exists. It's called 'Mac OS X'.

YES. My thought exactly. I do agree that it needs an updated look, and I do like your color scheme, but the old dock at the bottom middle, long top panel is too evocative of OSX. Add in the widget sidebar, and suddenly the whole thing is just an exercise in "Me too!". Gnome (and Linux!) should innovate for its UI, not just copy what everyone else has.

One more thing: I feel that Songbird is a poor choice of default music player. You want something that integrates well into the rest of the OS, and that means not looking however it damn well pleases by default. You need something that uses GTK+.

 look

I like your themes, it's similar to how i have my ubuntu set up.

The beauty of linux is you can customize to your hearts content.

I think the type of people who worry what the os looks like, are the people who will change it's look !

Hardly anyone keeps the default look of the os hence gnomelook kde etc!

I like it. More than any other. The GDM login screen is marvelous. But I wonder about the work it would take to make it.

Could you post the link to the wood background. I would like to make this theme for real. Maybe a few people could work on this. I would like to make your application launcher...

 So, what's wrong with that?

Yes, we should innovate for Gnome instead of copying OS X. But the truth is, OS X is copied because of its good looks, and there is nothing wrong with that.

The power of Linux is in what you CAN'T see, because of its solidity and extreme flexibility. The innumerable submissions to this website are a vivid example of that.

I don't think a new interface will reinvent the wheel any time. So I think it's a great mock up.

What could be improved in Gnome is the integration with Compiz and the ability for compositing to better display videos and programs like Google Earth IMO.

 Honestly . . .

This isn't in my taste. However, I think that this would be a great default theme because I think it would attract more users to Ubuntu (and invariably Linux). Also, it would be great if this theme would be created provided that it is made to be as small as possible (in terms of size).
