 i am happy

I am very happy somebody tries to improve the awful and unusable kickoff. I can not decide which one is the best: v2 or v3. :)
P.S.: kickoff is the reason why I do not use kde4 (I use kde3.5).

You do know there is a classic K-menu available in KDE 4, right? And has been since 4.0.2 at least.

but this classic Kmenu in kde4 hasn't got everythink what kmenu 3.5.x
And I think that It shouldn't be a kickoff ideas but just menu ideas. Kickoff isn't the one. There are people working on Lancelot menu or raptor menu.

There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary and those who don\'t.

Thank you for the infos. I checked the mentioned menu systems. I am impressed by Raptor.

In my eyes, kickoff is not so bad. Maybe it is fit my way, I used it in my daytime.

 v2 vs v3

I think V2 is better. This is like tasty-menu. An idea "don't click, just point and wait" isn't IMHO very useful

 Nice ideas

I only disliked the mouse-over app launch.
Loved the idea of a hierarchical menu and tabs on top instead of bottom and using less height for it.

1. Tabs over the menu is a grave mistake usability-wise since a user would have to move the mouse from one side of the menu (bottom side when launching the menu) to the other side (top side for the tabs)

2. Hover activation is something Lancelot is currently implementing (http://lancelot.fomentgroup.org/). It is mistake to put it in the place it is shown in the screenshot since moving the cursor to the right column could activate an application in the left column.

3. Hierarchical menu browsing is also something that is going to be provided by Lancelot.

 Too cluttered

I think this makes the menu way tooo cluttered. Icons and stuff all over the place. Personally, I don't understand why people don't like the current version: I mainly use the favorites anyway, which opens as the default tab. If I need to find something else, it's easy to click through the menu. There's nothing wrong with the current one, really. :/

 tasty

I really like the look of this one, reminds me a lot of my favorite menu tastymenu. But I agree that the tabs should be at the bottom.

Smart size autoresizing is crap, sorry. It's always confusing when things change optically without the user being aware of having given a trigger for the change.

Kickoff is not configurable enough. You cannot change the size of those huge icons in the tabs, you cannot change the size of the IMHO small icons in the menu itself, the tabs are of different width, the menu auto-adjusts itself in width according to the width of the writing in the tabs (german translators tend to write novels instead of short button texts) and you cannot make it more narrow, you cannot change the order of the tabs (I'd like to start with applications not favorites), you cannot adjust the font size, it ugly overlaps the panel, it doesn't remember its size when I make it bigger, I cannot sort the favorites by drag and drop, it really doesn't look good with the rest of the shiny KDE4 surface, there seems to be no way to always display the application description instead of only when hovering over it and so on. Kickoff badly needs improvements and ideas like yours.
