Description:

Audex is an audio grabber tool for CD-ROM drives based on KDE 4.

Audex creates profiles for LAME, OGG Vorbis (oggenc), FLAC, MP4/M4A/AAC (faac) and RIFF WAVE. Please install your favorite encoder.
Of course for WAVE no external encoder is needed!
Beyond you can define custom profile, which means, that audex works together with commmand line encoders in general.

You can define extensive filename schemes. Please take a look at the documentation on the Audex webpage to see what's possible.

Some features are:
* Extracting with CDDA Paranoia. So you have quite perfect audio quality.
* Extracting and encoding run parallel.
* Extensive filename schemes.
* Filename editing with local and remote CDDB/FreeDB database.
* Metadata correction tools like capitalize etc.
* Multi-profile ripping (with one commandline-encoder per profile).
* Fetch covers from the internet and store them in the database.
* Create playlists, cover and template-based-info files in target directory.
* Creates ripping and encoding protocols.
* Transfer files with KDE KIO-Slaves.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: As LAME still can't handle unicode characters correct, Audex uses since version 0.73 eyeD3 for tagging mp3 files, if available. It is highly recommended to install eye3D on your system if you create mp3 files with Audex! **

Changelog:

Changelog 0.79 (Södertälje release)
* Only bugfix release.

 Drive error

by Musikolo on: May 26 2009

Score 50%

Hi,

I have tried Audex and I get the next error in the status bar: "Drive error". I've tried to get a more detailled message, but the more verbose output I've been able to get is the next one by lauching audex in a console:

audex(2961) CDDAModel::slot_disc_status_changed: statusChanged ( 6 )

I have two DVD units.
a) DVD/RW (/dev/sr0)
b) DVD (/dev/sr1)

I hope you find the problem soon.

Best regards!

PS: If you know another to way to get a more verbose error message, please let me know.

hallo,

two questions:

1. have you tried each of your two single drives?
2. what drives (manufacture, model) do you have?

maybe you can send me the complete console output. you'll find my email on the audex page.

best regards, marco

Hi,

1. have you tried each of your two single drives?

Well, have only tried with one, the one that really works. The other one it's almost dead.

2. what drives (manufacture, model) do you have?

a) LG DVDRW - HL-DT-ST - DVDRAM GSA-H10N (/dev/sr0) This is the drive that works and, evidently, the oneI have used for my tests.
b) TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1502 (/dev/sr1) I haven't tried on this drive because, as said, it's almost dead. I'll end up one of these days throw it away.

The disk I have used has 60 tracks. It's an audio CD that comes with an English course book.

Best regards! :-)

Hi again,

I have done some more tests with a different audio CD and the problem keeps the same. I thought that, maybe, it would be helpful the next trace I've got using the strace command:

I have done the same test using K3b ripping feature and it did work great. Thus, the problem seems not to be related with either the CD drive not the CD medium, but somewhere in audex itself.

I hope it helps.

Best regards! :-)

Hi,

out of curiosity I have tried Audex on my TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1502 (/dev/sr1) drive, yes, the one that's almost dead, and guess what? It did work!

Surprisingly, it continues not working on other drive: LG DVDRW - HL-DT-ST - DVDRAM GSA-H10N (/dev/sr0). It seems there is something wrong with Audex preventing from reading the medium properly.

Apart from this, I would love if you could add to the text of Audex in the panel, the percentage of the work done, something like "Audex (16% done)" that changes as files are ripped.

I hope you find the problem and add this new feature soon.

Best regards! :-)

 encoder

Hi !

I am using audex 0.70 and can't encode anything.

Indeed, although I have selected ogg vorbis in my profile, it complains about lame not being present....

Thanks

I have questions first:

What distribution do you use? Have you tried Version 0.71b2?

And you can execute LAME just from your bash command line. LAME binary is in $PATH variable?

I have tried with 0.71b2 and it's the same.

I'm on openSUSE 11.1.

I can't execute lame from the console without any problem, even though the problem occurs when i select vorbis encoder.

I have installed lame and now it works. As of now you can't encode in ogg vorbis if you haven't lame installed. Hint : without lame, when I came back to the profile settings after saving it, encoder field was blank again.

Thanks

 disk error & ripping spped

 by google01103 on: Jun 10 2009

I have 2 dvd/cd drives, the plextor (sata PX-755a) is problematic. The device manager sees the new cd and when I select the option of audex to extract, audex opens but it gives me "device error' but gnormalize has no issues seeing or ripping from the drive.

Ripping speed:
I'm seeing just under 6x for ripping and 26 -> 30x for encoding, this seems slow vrs what gnormalize rips at.
The cd reader is 48x (ata lite-on sohw-1693), shouldn't my ripping speed be higher?

thanks, really like the cover's being added to the tag

so you are not able to rip with your plextor, but with your lite-on?

since some users reported problems with 2 cd/dvd drives in one computer, I'm going to build a system with 2 drives to test.
My systems all have only 1 drive by now.

ripping speed:
this is something depending on cdparanoia, because I use functions from this lib to extract the cdda data.
due to perfect extraction quality cdparanoia is in general somewhat slower compared to other libs. so this could be normal.

correct the plextor is problematic always giving "disk error" (even if the 2nd drive is empty)

could you add a selector for drive selection?

re: speed gnormalize has cdparanoia enable and yet still feels faster. I would always use it but shouldn't it be configurable?

Though I don't adjust frequency it seems to be an option available in other rippers

I don't know which distribution you are using, but it seems, that you are missing cdda paranoia libs or just the headers.

in debian you could solve this with

apt-get install libcparanoia-dev

for example.

Do you plan to add cuesheet support? There is a really good app on osx called xld: http://tmkk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/xld/index_e.html

Though I haven't found any good gui on linux for extracting audiocd into cue files, your app looks like it is going that way... it may be the last step before perfection! ^^

 Album Artist & Multiple Format

by ipsfirst on: Jul 1 2009

Score 50%

Great work!

I have a couple of feature requests:
Firstly, I would like to be able to set the Album Artist tag as well as the Artist tag. Currently I have to use a separate tag editor for this.
Secondly, I would like to be able to encode to multiple formats simultaneously, e.g. FLAC and Vorbis, without reading the data from the CD a second time. The only program I know of that currently does this is Asunder ( http://littlesvr.ca/asunder/ ). Being able to select multiple profiles by tick-boxes or similar would accomplish this.

Apart from these features, Audex is already the most useful CD ripper I have tried - and I have tried many!

One other thing: I think it would make more sense to be able to edit the CD data from the side-panel, rather than a pop-up. Some of the data is already shown there; it should be editable.

Thanks very much for this useful tool.
