My comment about indywiki is that it relies on a useless and disreputable source for it's information. Thus making indywiki useless except for retards who believe anything they read on the internet. And it is definately NOT an EDUCATION application.

Very convenient educational program, and quite easy to use, too. And the fact that some people question Wikipedia's reliability does not mean that all people shouldn't be free to access it and judge for themselves what's right and what's wrong.
I have some small problems with Indywiki. When I click "View->Remove Progress bar" (progress bar is removed) and then try turning it back on by clicking again "View->Remove Progress bar", Indywiki returns "QStatusBar::removeWidget(): Widget not found." I am using Python 2.5.1 and Qt 4.3.2 with the Oxygen GUI style, if that matters. Also, I think there should be a better way of choosing which Wikipedia site to use, outside of the limited list already present.

It has been PROVEN to be an UNRELIABLE source of information.

And I know some of you won't want to hear it but I have to agree somewhat with Leviathan as to the reliability of the information on wikipedia. Wikipedia has a less than scholarly track record.

Maybe this software should be filed under "EduTAINment".

With wikipedia, anonymous average "joes" with no credentials and no writing skills are allowed to publish anything they want and espouse whatever slanted philosophy or propaganda they wish.

I would hardly consider that a "reliable" source of information.

For example: history on wikipedia is being rewritten by 16 coffee house socialists. Vandals attack articles constantly. Facts are not checked. Cited references are frequently dubious.

I could list a hundred other problems with it but I digress.

Now this isn't necessary a problem with your indywiki program but it's akin to installing a broken processor on your brand new motherboard.

Couldn't you have used an actual reputable source like world book, encarta or brittanica?

this is open source software, a person or a team releases an early version of a program, and developers are welcome to contribute code if they find the project interesting. It helps most when people say 'fix this thing, or add this feature', rather that 'this software is too buggy'. Also if you notice this program is labeled as in beta version.

Agree with the one about Edutainment. No such category here though!

I've been using Wikipedia for > 2 years time and am constantly being impressed by the information found there and accuracy of it. I have met the phaenomenas that you mention very FEW times. It's not that easy as you say for a simple 'joe' to affect the quality of an article. True, on some articles one can vandalize or delete content, but it get's fixed soon, on internet real time, as hundreds of people might be watching and editing the article. Apart from this there are mechanisms that lock frequently vandalized articles. As an example try to edit a highly objective article, like 'George Bush', or 'Socialism' and see if you can make it.

This dispute can keep on for ages and I repeat this is not the correct place to do it, don't you think so?

His claim to have only come across inaccurate articles a FEW times is either disingenuous or he is a complete fool.

Anyone with half a brain can see that thousands of the articles on wikipedia are tagged with warnings about "original research", "quality standards", "unverified claims", etc.

For example, take a look at the entry for the restaurant "McDonalds" or the comedian "Dane Cook".

The fact that many articles are now locked is not something to brag about but instead a testiment to the dangers of having "average joe" write the information.

I agree with you. Most all articles have the slant of opinion as though some marijuana-smoking euro teenager wrote them.

Yes, a few high profile entries are now locked but THOUSANDS of others are not.

And who would even know which of these entries contained false information at the time that YOU read it? (Not when someone, if ever, gets around to correcting it!)

Additionally, many articles are simply plagerized from other sources.

There is no control and no accountability except for the few anecdotal examples mentioned by the apologists.

This brings me around to Indywiki. It seems typical of the linux community to steal information from other sources and claim it as your own. Indywiki is nothing more than a buggy reader that 'steals' all of it's information from a source that is both unreliable, and in some instances 'stolen' from somewhere else.

All all Linux users theives? Is there anything original on here?

Why is everything on this site a sad ripoff or port of some 10 year old windows/mac program?

What is disgraceful is the quality of indywiki and about 99% of the other software on this site. Just because it is open source or free does not give the author some kind of moral carte blanche to steal or pirate from other sources.

What these people do is look for a 15 or 20 year old windows program that has gone opensource. Spend 30 minutes messing with the code and attach their name to it. Then the rest of us are supposed to hail them as gurus or programming gods. They are nothing but cheap ripoff artists.

Your comment is so typical of a linux user. By your logic, if you don't like something about linux, you must be working for Microsoft. (As if an MS employee wouldn't have better things to do) Are all you people conspiracy theory whack jobs or what?

There is no competition between Linux and Microsoft. Linux has about 1% of the desktop market worldwide. MS doesn't care about you or your crappy knockoff software.

If all you want on here is people to blow smoke up the asses of these so called "programmers" then you'll continue to get weak utilities like this one.

I use linux as a hobby. I run it about 95% of the time. But I use windows and mac also. It's not a team sport. You don't have to pick a side. Grow up.

The quality of most "open source" software is terrible. and I'm not going to pat someone on the back for a crappy job.
