Description:

On my 386 pc running windows 3.11 around 10 or so years ago there was a program called animated icons. I think it used .ani files similar to animated .gif files and you could use them as your desktop icons.

What that did was allow you to have moving icons on your desktop instead of just the static icon files we see all the time. There were fighting airplanes for games, a butterfly with flapping wings for WordPerfect and space shuttle taking off etc.

Something like that for my linux desktop would be amazing. With Compiz and moving icons the linux look will keep years ahead of the competitors.

... perhaps I've got a better one:

I think Icons should be static because else you get crazy by all that moving and blinking.

But: If there is something new, e.g. a mounted device or new email or whatsoever, it could be animated to smoothly give you a hint without opening a popup-window.

What about that?

I agree. But I think KDE already supports animated icons. If I'm not completely wrong, the old default iconset did have a couple of animated icons, although the animations played only on mouseover. Or maybe I was only dreaming :P

I don't disagree with adding moving parts for notifications.

As for too many moving things on the desktop with animated icons, you shouldn't have to make them all animated just the ones you like. I think I used to have 3 or 4 moving icons. It changes the desktop look so that your desktop doesn't look like it has passed out aside from a moving clock when it's not in screen saver mode.

I've only been using Linux for about 6 months as my desktop. I don't think it currently supports any file formats that you can choose with moving bits.

Yup, it's called MNG and has been possible for a considerable number of years already :) It's just that none of the icons are animated (except for Kopete's new message waiting icon)

I would say it would be nice for mouse over icons, but anything I am not focusing on at that point in time I would find it quite annoying. Of course that's personal preference so making it configurable is an obvious way to go.

I like the idea of having animation to the (desktop)icons but I think it will be to much if some icons always animated.

I like the mouse over idea, I had that on Windows (desktopX I think it was). i think that By example if you have a E-mail icon on you desktop, and you have a E-mail the icon animate. (like you have whit the tray icons)

Maybe another idea:
No description whit the icons but when you hover the icons the animation starts and the description slides out of the right side and maybe some extra information about new email for example.

or support for .edj files?
this are enlightenments animated icons (they are only animated, on mouseover)
every animations is possible, blink, turn, jump ... i would really like to see this in KDE/Gnome, too

if you can read this, you don't need glasses
