Description:

MailKount is an applet for Kicker that regularly checks the number of mails on one ore two pop/imap servers and sends notifications on new messages.
This tool is mainly useful for people who are using webmail and not a mail client such as the very good KMail.

Note that default language for GUI is english. Screenshots show a french GUI just because I'm french and I made french translation.

Please, see homepage for more details.

Let me know if you see some bugs ;)

For next version, I would like to implement SSL but I don't have any email address providing this service. If you know a free email website with SSL+POP+IMAP support, let me know please ;)

NB : version 0.1 may cause some trouble because network queries are synchronous. Please, don't use version 0.1.

Changelog:

Version 0.3.1 :
- Correction of a stupid bug : if you have two boxes and receive 1 mail only on the first box, there was no notification... human error. Sorry!
- Thanks japc for the "EXAMINE" command ;)

Version 0.3 :
- IMAP support added. Requested by jirityr ;)

Version 0.2 :
- Add the ability to choose the color of the font, as requested.
- And much more important, a complete rewrite of the network part using only Qt stuff. The result is now that querying DNS and Socket connection are asynchronous and don't block kicker when connection is down, which was a huge bug of version 0.1.

Version 0.1 : initial release.

Not as far as I know.
I'm a Gentoo user so I make an ebuild.
Thanks to linux3114a, there is also a rpm for Suse users.

Do you support the SSL connection with IMAP? I never use the IMAP without SSL.

I see. In next version ;o) Sorry. I will wait for next version. Thanks for your work on this project. I'm missing very much some small email notification program. Good luck with SSL.

^^
I've just started to read "The Prestige", my free time is for the book for a few days.

Furthermore, GMail supports pop3s but not imap, I still don't know where to find imap+ssl (I haven't seached a lot :x)

 Nice one

Nice little app. Already using it.

Some comments:

You should do an "EXAMINE INBOX" (opens the folder read-only, no harm done) instead of "SELECT INBOX".

Also, why do you have only 2 configurable accounts?

If you want an account on a IMAP+STARTTLS I can get you one. Also POP3S (sorry, no pop3 starttls :/).

Keep up the good work.

I fear the problem is that I don't find any doc/example about qca (Qt Cryptographic Architecture). I will contact you for imap when I will have the courage to face SSL programming ;)

I have some small ideas also, but I want this applet to stay easy and simple to use ;)

I mean that you should use the EXAMINE command instead of SELECT. EXAMINE exists for that purpose, to get information on a folder. The syntax is the same as for SELECT but it opens the folder read-only :)

Ah OK, "EXAMINE INBOX" is an IMAP command.
I didn't know it, I will change this for next version, thanks ;)

 SSL Support

 by jamieb on: Mar 6 2007

You can turn any remote mail server into an SSL server like this:

MailKount mail app (STARTTLS) connects to localhost on port 993
|
v
stunnel4 running on port 993
(receives encrypted, translates back
to plain text) connects across internet to port 143 on mail server

|
Internet (in plain text)
|
v

IMAP or POP3 server on other end
that only accepts plain text connections on port 143

Using this technique, you can test connecting to your local "server" running SSL on port 993 just like a real SSL server, and the connection will be decrypted and forwarded to the real mail server.

Of course, this is still just as insecure as before, but at least you can test SSL for development purposes using your own, comfortable mailbox and user account.

To do this, you can use either SSLWrap or STunnel3 or Stunnel4. All of these should have emerges available in Gentoo.

example with STunnel4:

pops.conf:

; Some debugging stuff useful for troubleshooting
debug = 7
output = stunnel4.log
client = yes

[pops]
accept = 995
connect = gmail.com:110

sudo stunnel4 pops.conf

(must use sudo or su because you're trying to connect to a port numbered below 1024, which is a privileged port.)

tail -f stunnel4.log
in the current directory for info.

Then just point your mail client to 995 on your local machine and get your POP3 mail via SSL.

It's worth repeating: this is NOT secure. it's only encrypting between your mail client and the Stunnel daemon on your computer.
