Now Listening for Pidgin
Version 0.2 - February 2009

Description:
A plugin for Amarok 1 and 2 that updates your Pidgin status message with what you are currently listening too.

If you want to update your Gaim status message, look for the AmarokGaim package.

Dependencies:
* Amarok (Tested on Amarok 1.4.10 or Amarok 2.0-SVN-Neon Jan 14 2009)
* Pidgin with D-Bus support (Tested on Pidgin 2.5.2)
* Python with D-Bus support (Tested on Python 2.5.2 (Should also work with
Python 2.4))
* DCOP client (If using Amarok 1. Tested on KDE 3.5.10)
* Optionally depends on chardet for better character
decoding. [http://chardet.feedparser.org/]

High great work first of all !

Although the python script takes about 50 % of new dualcore cpu :

I´m running Ubuntu 7.10 - Gnome 2.20.1 (all latest)
kernel 2.6.23
Python 2.5.1
your script : 0.1.7 ( installed via Amarok)
Amarok : 1.4.7
Pidgin 2.2.1
Debug = True : log is empty except the track info
Ending Amarok and or Pidgin doesn´t change anything, process still there with high usage.

Thx for your help , tell me what info you need ill provide it then

One more :
I kill the script/process by hand , it gets reloaded and then runs fine with 0 % cpu usage

Hello, i can now reproduce the bug directly, if X crashes the script hangs with high CPU load, to get amarok right then i have to restart that dcopserver thingy i dont know if thats automaticly under KDE its not under Gnome maybe.
The Script has to be killed too of course then ...

After a long struggle, I eventually got it to work in Gentoo. Here's how:

Here's what I was using:
media-sound/amarok-1.4.7-r2 (with USE python)
net-im/pidgin-2.2.2 (with USE dbus)

Download, Install, and Run AmarokPidgin
1) Download from--here
2) Inside of Amarok, go to Tools > Script Manager
3) Select "Install Script" and browse and select AmarokPidgin
4) Select AmarokPidgin on the left and select "Run"

Configure AmarokPidgin
1) Inside of Amarok, go to Tools > Script Manager
2) Select Amarok Pidgin on the left and select "configure"

Note: If pressing the "configure" button seemingly does nothing, you need to install the following package:
kde-base/kdialog

3) Choose Status
4) Type "Now Playing $artist - $title" --or something similar
5) Change Pidgin status to "Media"

I found this block of code in the
~/.kde/share/apps/amarok/scripts/AmarokPidgin/AmarokPidgin.py file:

self.purple.PurpleSavedstatusActivate(self.default)

...and I changed it to:
elif is_in( ("empty", "idle", "paused") ):

self.purple.PurpleSavedstatusActivate(self.default)
self.song = None
self.update_display("Not Listening")

...now it updates when I pause or stop my music. I wish this was an option under "configure." It probably shouldn't do this by default, though.

Well, I wasn't going to post this, but since someone has already gotten use out of one modification, perhaps someone will find use in this.
I modified the application to MY liking. Now, it says:
"Music: $artist - $title" by default
"Music: [Paused] $artist - $title" when I pause
"Music: --Song Change--" (for 5 seconds) when I change songs.

This was modified from Version 0.1.7 of AmarokPidgin.

Here's what I changed:
added "import time" to the top.
changed "def listenForSongChanges(self)" function to:

I am using the script in both KDE 3.5 and KDE 4.0 with Amarok 1.4.8. In KDE 3.5 it works, as expected, in KDE 4.0 however the variables don't get substituted. Other than that, the script does communicate with Pidgin, for example if I set "$artist - $title [amaroK]' as status, I get ' - [amaroK]' in Pidgin. Any thoughts on how to solve that?

Check if you have the dcop commandline program and that it is working. For example try running from the commandline:

dcop amarok player artist

Ok.on line 15 change it from DEBUG = false to DEBUG = true. Run the program for a bit then post /etc/AmarokPidgin.log

It does change. The problem is that the variables $title and $artist in the script are not replaced with the appropriate strings, the intercommunication does work. It must be a python thing...

So the status messages format that I set is this: '$artist - $title [amaroK]'

After applying your patch, the output in /tmp/AmarokPidgin.log is:

Some track changes were manual, by means of skip track, for others I waited until the song changed by itself after it was over.
