Open to view vs. open to edit

KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 64%
Downloads:  66
Submitted:  Oct 25 2006

Description:

This is an idea about opening files in KDE4.

Simply put there should be two different methods for opening files:
1. For opening the file for viewing/annotation in a viewer application such as Okular, Gwenview, Konqueror, Kaffeine or Amarok.
2. For opening the file for editing in an editor application such as Kword, Krita, Quanta or Kino.

There are obviously numerous different possibilities for providing these two methods, and thus it should be user-defined. Nevertheless, a couple of options would be:
- Single click to view, double click to edit. (really fast, but hard to learn to distinguish between the two actions consistently)
- Click (or double click) to view, the same with a modifier key to edit. (a bit slower, but easier to distinguish between the two)

The main objective here is to consistently get rid of the massive overkill of opening a big application such as OpenOffice or Krita just to look at a file and also to provide a clear and consistent distinction between viewing content and authoring/editing content.

Obviously the main benefits of this addition will be realised only with a comprehensive set of very lightweight viewers for a plethora of file formats.

Great idea! Viewing and editing the same file might be completely different procedures for certain types, and the two methods should be distinct.

As a suggestion, perhaps the file association settings could split the application preference order into viewing and editing categories, and allow the user to specify a default opening method. Then, in the right-click context menu, the "Open with" entry would be split into "View with" and "Edit with".

Again, wonderful idea. :D

I can's see why mime types cant be set to distinguish between a viewer and an editor. Though it will most likely require two mime data bases it isn't a huge drain on storage overhead. Though the OP stated it would be slower to use a key modifier to change between the two I disagree. I would prefer to keep my single click to highlight a file for various reasons. But holding a key modifier down isn't a huge issue and its faster than right clicking and selecting "Open With..."

It isn't about it being free. Rather, its about the freedom it brings.

To extend your idea: we also ought to have an option to start an editor (any editor) from within our previewing apps.

(The editor then opens the file the (pre)viewer is currently displaying.)
