Description:

This is my first mockup for a future, slick, integrated desktop environment, hoping to help someway for Topaz.

Some ideas taken from the net, some maybe new. What do you think?

Please note that this is only a mock-up, not a really existing theme, I just wanted to show some ideas. This means that you cannot install/use/have this on your computer, but instead you are encouraged to leave opinions, comments, suggestions, etc. either here or in the related blog.

Small note: no, that "evil-looking thing" (as someone called it :D ) you can see on the wallpaper won't become the Gnome 3.0 logo. I just put it there to experiment something with Inkscape and I didn't remove it.

Note also that I'm not part at all of any Gnome-related team (developers, artists, whatever). So, this isn't anything "official", nor directly related to Topaz. It just shows some ideas that I'd like if implemented sometime in the future.

Well to make ths would be a big problem, the progress bars you could maybe do with conky and the bar in the bottom with an awn mod but this is not possible and in gnome really not. Then you have to write a new program and this would be work.

Actually, this is not gnome-ish, but i think - it would be possible to make a totally new environment! Great vision!

 Brainstorm

I put some idea on Ubuntu brainstorm about improving the panel:

Maybe it will help...

Unfortunately, there is no gnome-brainstorm, but I think non-ubuntu-users may vote there, too ;-)

I saw this mockup a few times now and decided to reply on it now.

It looks extremely nice but some critics as well.
First about what's possible and what not.
That's easy to answer. Everything except the "on-going" tab is possible. on-going isn't possible because you need to read events to see what there status is and how far that is. If you where to make this (i know it's a mockup.. just telling) then you would need to write some code for every application that you want to support in that drop down thing OR all applications need to use 1 way of broadcasting events. A lot are doing this already with dbus so you can get quite far by using dbus but other then that it's just a big pita.

Everything else is possible and some parts are already made (look at avant-window-navigator for the transparent bottom stuff) i actually think that everything on the bottom is possible to make in avant-window-navigator with a few plugins. (look at gOS Space what they did with it)

And for the critic..
How will this look when you open a application in fullscreen (windowed but tking all the space)? i would love to see a mockup about that.

And can you make a flash animation of this?

the on-going part _IS_ possible. Nautilus 2.24 already includes something similar with a system tray icon. As soon as some parts have been moved from nautilus to core gio/gvfs or GTK+ respectively, you have support in every application that uses those libs for filetransfers.

Amazing idea! ;-)
