Description:

This is my first mockup for a future, slick, integrated desktop environment, hoping to help someway for Topaz.

Some ideas taken from the net, some maybe new. What do you think?

Please note that this is only a mock-up, not a really existing theme, I just wanted to show some ideas. This means that you cannot install/use/have this on your computer, but instead you are encouraged to leave opinions, comments, suggestions, etc. either here or in the related blog.

Small note: no, that "evil-looking thing" (as someone called it :D ) you can see on the wallpaper won't become the Gnome 3.0 logo. I just put it there to experiment something with Inkscape and I didn't remove it.

Note also that I'm not part at all of any Gnome-related team (developers, artists, whatever). So, this isn't anything "official", nor directly related to Topaz. It just shows some ideas that I'd like if implemented sometime in the future.

Sorry, but for me this looks just too similar the kde4-mockups and screens...

If KDE/Gnome should really become that similar, why should there be any need for 2 desktop environments??

Well, as I said MayB is _not_ the future Gnome (and on live.gnome.org you can see there are no projects at all for gnome 3.0) - it is just an idea for a future desktop, and it could be the new KDE as well.
Besides, the images you linked are mockups as well as this, nobody from KDE team said KDE4 will look like them (and honestly they don't look so similar to me).

I would love to have my desktop look like that.

And it does not resemble the KDE one at all, this one looks amazing while the KDE mockups are ugly as hell.

You may have heard of Avant Window Navigator (often referred to as AWN - http://awn.wetpaint.com ), the youngest, but the greatest, dock-like application available today for Gnome. First of all, check it out (freshest features in SVN)!

Well, after seeing how good it is for a 0.1, be warned that the author said he will make it possible to have AWN looking and behaving quite like May-B!
It's just a matter of time, then it will be all about developing the plugins we want (btw, Python! meaning quick development).
Yeah!

- Those menus have a horrible arrangment.
- No HID at all.

Only the "status/time remaining" feature on the top I found to be cool, altrought its messed up too.

I dont know why people is voting this positive. I guess its because everythings "transparent".

1. Menu were made just to show some of their contents, no real usability-or-whatever study behind them. Anyway, I don't think they are so confusing.
2. HID? Perhaps you mean HIG? But (besides HIG relates to applications) what's so far from what HIG says?

Why is On-going section messed up?

Is better if you document your selves before trying to propose something.

There are excelent documentation about overbloated WIMP interfaces in http://modeemi.cs.tut.fi/~tuomov/ion/
to start with.

Moreover, if you look carefully, you will note that here are no specific rules to order menus or windows just the ¨eye candy¨... (or eye stressing not viewable widgets)

Is not usable, just mouse-able and show-able, I think. Just like you are commenting about. I think that many eye candy junkies are dreaming with Ion3 or Wmii in his ¨desktops¨, wich is obvious if you wanna have a clear and pleasant setup:

The gnome developers must give a short view to Ion3 and the recent Wmii, trying to copy the best ideas and making more dinamic the actual widgets of GTK2. Do several cleaning to the now overbloated Winshit protocols. Thats all IMHO. Not needing 1Gb R.A.M. to run a simple ¨desktop¨.

Although you may want to install Vista to achieve an 80s desktop with (new) technologies from the 70s and OpenGL 3D graphics.

Bye, however this is the better ¨Topaz¨ approach here.

WMII + GTK2 + Rxvt + Lua and a beautiful Wallpaper. That is what I call: GNU/Linux !! You ever may call it [...] whatever.

Some time ago I gave Wmii a try, and I quite liked the way it used the available space, but I found then that I had to spend much time setting it up to make it behave how I wanted, and then I also had to learn a lot of keyboard shortcuts. IMHO Wmii/Ion3 need to have an easier learning curve to attract more users and to be more mouse-friendly, that at the beginnings helps very much, when you haven't recorded yet all those shortcuts. They both are good projects, but I'm afraid they are useful for power-users only.
Besides, many application (most of those whose windows are not intended to be resizable) doesn't fit very well with Wmii behavior, and this makes it harder to get used to this "way" to the desktop.


MayB, on the other hand, was a simple proposal mainly regarding the dock and the way it can be expanded "on demand" through those "balloons". I just concentrated on this, and gave less attention to the contents of the balloons (also because I think that this should be decided/customizable by the user). I had no intention to invent the absolute desktop.


Obviously, just my humble 2 cents.
