Description:

mac's finder has a very comfortable way of moving from one directory to another. whenever you enter a directory, it splits the view to include the newly open one, instead of opening it in a new window or sth of the sort.
this way you can very easily access any of the previously opened directories without trashing the screen.

i think it would be great if it was added to konqueror as an option.

ps. just in case: i know konqueror can already split the view. what i want is to make it do it *automatically* whenever a new directory is entered.

 Usability issues

While the NeXT-like split-view would be nice, PLEASE for the love of God, don't incorporate the idea that the location bar should no longer be a editable combo drop. That's the one thing that I've hated most about the UI of OSX Finder.

i'm sorry. you're right it might look like i'm trying to smuggle such an idea.
in fact, i'm just using pathbar (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33225) and haven't thought of changing it.
pathbar gives you both the gnomish bar, and an editable line (you just click on the arrowish thing to change the mode).

i'd be definitely against removing the line, too.
should i, perhaps, include another screenshot with an editable line?

 Nautilus?

I think I saw something similar in Nautilus, but instead of a split, a new window would popup showing the contents. When you finished your action, the popped up windows would close. I think it was like that. :)

Better would even be that the same window would be used and you would return to the folder you started from after finishing the drag 'n drop action.

amarok has a 'ipod mode' in it's latest SVN versions, which works a bit like this. imho it could be done, and might work...

That idea was introduced in NEXSTEP more than 10 years ago.. but none of modern filemanagers use it :/

PARENA:
new windows are somewhat irritating. well, for me at least.
i'm sorry, i didn't quite get your idea about drag'n'drop :/

Superstoned:
do you think it would be possible to adapt it for konqueror. or, even better, do you think you could do that? i'm afraid i'm not good enough for that, myself.

wizard123:
i wonder why it got forgotten. i find it pretty useful and comfortable when working on a mac.

I'll try explaining again:

- You pick up a file
- Drag it over a folder
- Folder opens up
- You drag it along another folder
- Folder opens up
- You drop the file in it
- All extra folders close and you return to you folder you started from.

Hope that clears it up a bit. :)

yes, it does :)
well, what you're saying certainly is an option but to be honest i'm not a great fan of new windows... that's why i though the nextstep/finder solution would be a nice way to combine an easy access to the history with not bloating the desktop...

What happens dig down to, say, /home/user/a/b/c/d/e/f/g/h/i/j/ ? As I see it, the UI would become plain unusable.

(FWIW, I might implement this idea in Dolphin File Manager.)
