Tearable Desktops

KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 55%
Downloads:  44
Submitted:  Aug 9 2006

Description:

I would work on a mock-up but my artistic skills suck. So a summary will have to b sufficient.

Tearing:
The desktop applet could have each desktop be torn off and dropped into the current view- sort of like Picture In Picture, resizing and maximising could be possible but this could allow the user to launch programs in one desktop whilst still looking at the other, the desktop could be either kept above all windows and allow the user better multitasking, improving the multiple desktop idea.

What about the option on right clicking a desktop icon to have a split view, like Konqueror? That way transferring files could be easier, perhaps with remote computers too?

Sorry if this has been poorly explained and needs a little more development but I thought it may be an interesting concept.

I really like the sound and potential of this, would be nice to possibly see something in the near future but not intregal to KDE4.

if you need to use 2 applications at the same time, you put them in the same workspace.

That is the whole point of workspaces.

NEway, so your suggesting that users could have 2 kickers and 2 desktops in the same screen?

This would do nothing but complicate things.

Use Unix. Use Linux. Use Debian. Use KDE.

So say a user has a couple of multimedia apps they want on top at all times but occasionally wants to get them out of the way completely, yet needs to come back to them later- you can't see how having a group of applications separate could potentially help?

kpager2 may launch applications and open documents on other desktops than the one which is acurrently active.
