Real OSD

KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 75%

Submitted:  May 25 2006

Description:

The idea is simple --- use an OSD layer that applications like amaroK, kmix and even k3b can use for there OSDs.

This layer should be on top of *everything* even the mouse pointer, and should be completely transparent for mouse events which are simply past to the underlaying window. It can also be a good idea to use something like save_under.

I don't know if this is difficult to implement, but i can see that we'll need to use some X11-extensions, can XGL or AIGLX do something like this?

I love this idea. It would be awesome with the common OSD in KDE. Maybe the KNotofications should be extended with this feature.
Just imagine the clock extension joined with klirc :)
Very good!

Cheers

 Good idea!

I think there should certainly be a now, more standard way of drawing OSDs, as the only existing standard, the xosd library, only does text.

I especially like the idea that the OSD should be transparent to mouse clicks, i.e. click on it and the window behind receives the click.

An added benefit of having a standard library would be that apps wouldn't have to do messy things with transparency the way amaroK currently does. AmaroK draws nasty fake transparency which doesn't update when the window behind does. The library could be configured in one place to be opaque, fake transparent or really transparent with kompmgr (or AIGLX/XGL).

Real transparency combined with mouse transparency would be absolutely stunning, as well as being much more useful as you could continue to interact with the application window under the OSD.

bash-2.05b# cat /dev/mem | strings | grep -i llama
Damn, my RAM is full of llamas!

I'd definitely give this idea a thumbs up. GTK+ apps already have the option of using ghosd (http://neugierig.org/software/ghosd/) to get the features you describe.

The idea is not new. Somebody else came up with an idea like this a few weeks / month ago. But I like it. And since you and the other guy got high ratings I hope it will be implemented into kde4

I don't like OSDs, they only get in my way. K3B's OSD comes to mind. You can't get rid of it and it always sits on top of your menu buttons. There is a much better solution where display sits nicely in the taskbar and appears when you want it to: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33673

"This layer should be on top of *everything* even the mouse pointer"
IMO, it's really bad form to put *anything* on top of the mouse pointer.

Regardless, I still think a standardized API for OSDs would be awesome. I just don't think the traditional OSD approach is appropriate.

I hate OSDs.
I would like to be able to disable every OSD on my computer.

At most, this "message" may be displayed in a box that _I_ am able to look at clicking on an icon of a panel. As seen in many mockups and the link in preview comment.

OSD are just disturbing. But One may be able to configure somewhere to have the OSD Pop up before it join the messges tray, and there beeing transluent .... if you whant.
