Description:

When a dialog appears and you cannot use the application below, then somehow it has to be shown that on the application cannot be clicked. Remember the logout dialog box, when the display becomes grayscale. This is the same instead of the display, the inaccessible application changes to inform you that you cannot click on it.
My idea is to have different styles for this job (here I will call it dialog fadeout). The styles can be made to be very fast (for older computers) and more complex that need more performance. These styles can be managed from the control center. I have placed one mockup of the control center (made on kde 3.5.2). The idea is to have three types of styles - the fastest is the first (example 3 on screenshot 2). The second is fade to color with transcluency (example 1 on screenshot 2). The thrd type is based on scripts (example 2 and 4 on screenshot 2). For example when the dialog appears, below it the application fills with leaves, or becomes more blurry. The scripts can be installed and uninstalled. This way kde4 will have one new style category (like splash screens, decorations, icon packages) - the dialog fadeout effects. These effects can be used also in the logout screen. It is good if the user can choose different effects for dialog fadeout and logout fadeout sdreens.
If you have any questions and suggestions I would like to answer.

How aboul blurring startup splash screen?
1. When You logout from KDE it makes a screenshot of Your desktop and blurs the screen.
2. When You login next time Your screen starts with blurred screenshot and the screen is getting less blurred while KDE is loading
It would make KDE feel starting faster becouse You would see Your desktop second after clicking login, could be nice

Very nice idea :)
Now the translation from login screen to the user's desktop screen is ... NONE :). So there can be added effects like these.

My idea is only a draft, to solve a problem and make it nice to look. From here we can manage to make it from frog to princess :)

Why to make a screenshot? KDE 4 has layers or something like that, it would be possible to make effects like blour, and the background is moving.

You don't need screenshot if Your KDE is loading instantly, if it takes about 30 seconds to fully load than You need screenshot becouse You won't have anything else to show.
If kde 4 will first load desktop and then will load apps and other stuff then You don't need it, but I doubt it.

This is not a plagiarism.

I had the idea long before to start this brainstorm for kde4. This entry is amost the same (in some part). I saw it a few day ago. However I still wanted to publish mine, because it has difference.

 XGL

This is the sort of thing which could be done fast on XGL. In XGL, at least on the Kororaa LiveCD, windows belonging to unresponsive applications lose colour (i.e. fade to grayscale - same brightness, looks much cooler than the current logout fade).

I think that would be a good effect to use for unclickable parents of modal dialogs, as it clearly indicates that a window is not interactive, while allowing you to view information in the parent window.
