Description:

Icon set for KDE 3.0 and KDE 3.1
Complete iconset with around 600 original icons. It can be used as individual icons for X desktops, or as a complete iconset for KDE 3.0-3.1 or above (new KDE features will not be iconized at this moment).
Please, read the 'readme' text file for more info.
This iconset is under LGPL. Read the 'lesser.txt' text file about the license.
Enjoy it!
Many thanks to es.kde.org to host the icons; muchas gracias people :D
Carlitus

Changelog:

1.00
Finally available as a direct download.
-Added icons for these daily use apps: Kget, Kmail, Ark, K3b
-An important change: now it's under LGPL; previously was under GPL, and changed because the LPGL it's more permissive (requested by some KDE dev, and suggested by some Gnome users too).

This iconset was stored in a external server. At this date, that server don't allow external links to their files, so this iconset can't be downloaded! I can pay for a extensive-downloaded file like this iconset, so i will appreciate any help (a server to store my files freely -or not-). Thanks for the support.

0.95
11-august-2003
Only fixed a broken download link

0.95
-Added the 128x128 size. Not all icons are in this size.
-Added KDE 3.1 icons, such tab icons, kget, messagebox, ...
-Added the throbber.
-Fixed important icons, previously released but missing on last update (such filesave, www)
-Small fixes.
-The Readme text file is more complete. Now have howto's, links to other Noia icons/skins and the complete iconlist.

0.90
Refining and polishing of lots of icons, specially for actions and apps.
Now the Noia icons for KDE is under GPL license.

0.50
Added 142 new icons.
No more icons will be added (except if there's any important KDE missing icon).
Other icons will be released apart.
The next release will be the Release Candidate, and it will contain some icons redesigned and the small icons fixed.
Now it's time to say wich are the bad designed icons. Send me a e-mail or post a comment.
Thanks

... not fonctional !
I only use very tiny icons, and all noia icons look the same !
I prefer the default icon theme :(

Have you reason. This icon set are intended to have a clear design, and very simplified (to be viewed correctly at lower sizes)... but mi first intention isn't this...
I'm a OSX user, and i'm very habituated to high icon sizes. These icons are 'thinked' with high icon sizes in mind.
I discovered that lots of Linux users prefer smaller sizes (maybe for see more files using lists), and the K menu shows very little sized icons (sometimes defocused).
I will try to fix small sizes (sharpening them), or make smaller versions for those icons with a design too many 'charged' for small sizes.
Anyway, this icon size is created specially for higher sizes, and it uses lots of curves (that makes hard their identification on smaller sizes).
I accept if this icon set don't likes to some users (or a lot)... my last intention is to change the use of KDE desktop, only to change a bit.

 Konqueror Throbber

I noticed that you haven't included a "throbber" for konqueror. I was able to take some of the icons you have done and throw together my own "throbber" (for 32x32, I didn't do 22x22 because I don't use it, and I only have so much free time :)). It's available at:
http://home.cogeco.ca/~5thshadow/kde.png
You can probably do something better, but in the interim here's something for all those people who are looking for a decent throbber to go with your amazing icons :)

(Oh yeah: just put it in the noia/32x32/actions directory.)

 Great job

I love it. Good job, well done.

For kde, I think we might need a new icon to substitute the animated K icon in konqueror. I would like to see some new icons like battery (for laptop), volume (kmix), clipper, korganizer, those have small icons in the panel. I also like the lock and logout buttons in the panel to be colored. If you can add new icons for staroffice, xine and phoenix, that will be great.

Thank you very much for your excellent work.

 Comments on design

 by denis09 on: Nov 20 2002

Score 50%

Here is some critique. Only my personal feelings, and I must say this iconset is among the top, thats why I commented so thoroughly :)

apps :

- hwinfo (too much difference from most sets, not obvious meaning)

- kcmdrkonqui (not very obvious what the icon symbolizes)

- kedit (looks like a gfx program, not an editor, probably because it looks like a brush, not a pencil)

- kmail (does not look like a mail app, more like a newspaper ?! the @ is not obvious enough, took me many views to understand)

- konqueror (looks too "generic" not specific, maybe add some "land" on the globe?! something like the locale icon would do well :)

- kpackage (looks like a rubiks cube game, not a package.. the package feeling is not obvious enough. Maybe more similar to package ?)

- package_settings (what is the meaning of this icon? aha, a lever of some kind.. see below)

devices :

- cdwriter (could this be better red ? red as for burning / flame colour ?)

filesystems :

- exec (looks like settings ? maybe a gear style icon would be better here ?)

mimetypes :

- deb (does not look like it belongs with the others)

- message (same as the kmail icon really, not clear enough it is a mail we are talking about)

- pdf (what is the meaning of this icon ?)

- recycled (not obvious meaning)

- rpm (again like deb, does not look like it belongs with the other icons)

- shellscript (what is the meaning of this ?)

- source (not clear meaning?)
(better with language icons on top, makes it very obvious..)

- source_pl (making the pearl a different colour would enhance the effect I think?)

- tar (same as with the kpackage icon, not clearly enough looking like a package)

- vcard (looks more like an expansion PCI card than a businesscard?)

General comments :

Settings control knobs do not look good when there is only one knob, two (like remote.png) looks much better

The different editor icons are maybe a little bit too different ?

Could the key look clearer if it was a brighter colour ?

requests :

please please can we have a kvim / vim icon and a phoenix icon ?

Thanks for creating this, I am not using it now, but could very well do at some point ! :)

 Install probs.

by jaffa on: Nov 23 2002

Score 50%

Does anyone know how to install the icons? I downloaded it and got noia\16x16\actions, apps etc and same for 22x22, 32x32 etc. When I go into control center and click the open folder am I opening each sub folder or the main root folder? Seems like there should be a specific file that I should be opening not opening a path. I've tried typing the path into the edit box and selecting install theme/add but the text box just clears. What am I doing wrong??? The folders contain loads of .png files and I can see the icons in Konqueror.

 HowTo

by Carlitus on: Nov 23 2002

Score 50%

If you wish to use these icons as Iconset for KDE, open the icon themes dialog, search for the 'noiaXXX.tar.gz' file (XXX means the version) then click Install et voila.
You don't need to untar the file to use the iconset.
Untar if you only wish to use the icons individually.

This is what I have in the text box:

/home/jon/themes/icons/noia050.tar.gz

I press install theme and then apply and nothing happens? Am I still doing something really stupid?
