Description:

Having no or less icons on your desktop leaves more room for other nice stuff like karamba themes or better view of you wallpaper. Also, although the kmenu now is very efficient in sorting apps it is sometimes hard to find the app you are looking for.

So how can you access your apps in a way that is easy AND fast and doesnt take to much space from your desktop because icons on your desktop are fast and easy but they can become a mess.

Why not type them?
I came with the idea of just placing one fancy intelligent textfield on your desktop. If you want to start an app you can just type the apps catogory, name or description in the field. So if i want firefox i can easily type either "firefox", "Browse the web", "Internet" or something similair. Since the textfield is smart it will understand: "browse the web" and start firefox.
Now by typing "internet" I might as well have meant ktorrent so now the textfield should popup some sort of menu with internet apps.
You should also be able to type locations on the internet or on your computer in the textfield.

This way of accessing apps is great for beginning users who dont think like: I want firefox/konqueror but think i want to browse the web. They can easily type it in the smart textfield. Once (a very long time ago) i spend ages looking for my trash because it was not on my desktop. With this textfield i could have easily typed "trash" and my trash would show up.

So this textfield should basicly be an intelligent combination of the commandline, an address bar and search tool.

Please see the sample pictures and the download(which is an sample picture too) and please post your comment :)

I use katapult to launch most of my apps, and it works almost like what you described here. Give it a try.

Cheers,

What would be cool is if the "Spotlight" [Mac] feature was added to the Alt+F2 giving a list of potential possibilities. I say potential possibilities, because it would be cool if it would show both cases (upper and lower); for example, running eterm doesn't work, but Eterm does. If I typed in eterm it would show Eterm as a possible choice.

P.S. This feature would also be cool when adding shortcuts.

I didnt knew about alt-f2 yet, handy feature :) My idea is something like that but improved with maybe some eye candy and it should sit on your desktop.
It should understand things like: "Search the web", "Find arandompicture.jpg" having something like that is also great for beginners i think.
I understand its hard to program something like that, not even talking about multiple language support. but it would be cool right?

Eye candy? Try Katapult.
And why sit on your desktop? WHen you click alt+F2, the textbox is focused, and you just have to type. If it sits on the desktop, you have to show desktop, click to focus the text box and then start to type!
And, there is a Kicker applet to run commands.

gg: kde
to search web using google.

Get http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=17201 and
locate: kde.png
to search.

There are other nice features - e.g. a calculator. :)

You might want to know about Deskbar: http://raphael.slinckx.net/deskbar/ which is an applet in gnome, that does exactly this.
