Description:

After giving it some thought I came up with this idea for the Kmenu.

Basically the idea is to have a side-scrolling menu to change between categories such as Office, Internet, Multimedia, System or whatever. The submenus and applications for that particular category will then appear below the main side-scrolling menu, and allow the user to expand or contract them in order to save space.

Important actions such as shutdown and search, and/or important apps such as Kcontrol or the users home folder, will be represented by icons on the far left so that they are never hidden from view.

This design should be fully customisable and allow the user to include categories at their discretion such as ‘recently used’ or ‘favourite apps’, and decide which category is shown as default.

Some of the icons used came from the CrystalClear icon set.

Let me know what you think.

I see KMenu's idea getting more and more fancy and complicated. But id like to see a clean menu where I can acces my apps as fast as possible. To me it doesnt seem fast to first scroll to the right tab. I like the buttons in the sidebar though.

I feel the same way, I just don't like these overcomplications.

Hmmm, I've just had a thought, why does the menu need to be limited to a small part of the screen. What is the point in saving space, if all it means that we need more clicks to get to what we want.
Also, now that we have 3d, couldn't we have a fancy, large, 3d menu, maybe a sphere, possibly in the middle of the screen, or taking up almost the whole screen. I'm not really sure what, and it could be a stupid idea. But it would be nice to see some ideas in more radical directions like that. Rather than just complicated versions of the standard menu.

I also like the sidebar buttons though. :)

I thought about this as well, the problem with fancy 3D is that not all people are able to get DRI working on their PC, especially if they have some wierd onboard GPU.

Not meaning to discourage you, but I don't quite see the point in having multiple applications for the same task; and otherwise it looks like it's taking a lot of space for not much stuff.

Keep trying at it, as I know it's easier to criticize than to make my own ideas of how it could/should work =)
