Run a virtual desktop as another user

KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 31%
Downloads:  86
Submitted:  Apr 22 2006

Description:

My computer is used by number of people.
I have set up a user that everybody can use to browse web and stuff.

But i myself usually end up using that user and need to re-login when i need to do something more than web.

It\\\'d be really great to be able to login as a diffrent user in a single virtual desktop rather than the whole system.

This would also improve security by alloing to browse web using a restricted user and do serious stuff wirh normal priviledges.

There is a downside of course - moving windows between deskops with diffrent users canot be allowed.

 i don't agree

You can already run application as a different user. (via console, via ALT F2 and sudo, via a nice tool somewhere in the KDE-menu).

Also you van switch session/start a new session as a different user. You can switch easely from session to session via the K-menu, desktop-menu of ctr-alt-F'numberofsession'

These functions already give what you need, no need for some virtualisation or so...

bye

Sorry. Didn't know about this feature.

It would still be nice to have a more visual way to switch sesstions than
pressing a fancy keyboard shorcut.
Maybe a session switcher panel for Kicker...

idd, since you didn't know.... this show the feature is too much hidden.

The K menu now has "Switch User" which is pretty much what you're looking for.

 How to do it

1. Install xnest. For Debian apt-get install xnest will work.
2. Xnest :1 & DISPLAY=:1 startkde
That will start the Xnest server and also run the start KDE script.

Even better, you could write it into a bash script like this:

#!/bin/bash
Xnest :1 & DISPLAY=:1 startkde

and then create a desktop shortcut for it.
