Description:

A multi-client Notification Daemon.

UPDATE @ 19/06/2006
-------------------
Sorry! There haven't been many updates! My main laptop hd crashed and I lost alot of data (I do have a backup with most important data though)

Crosslink is probably going to work together with the Galago project. We are going to contact Galago soon.
Check here for more information: http://www.galago-project.org/news/index.php

UPDATE @ 30/04/2006

Thanks to Tony Wolf (dragon-fire) this project might become a reality! Read more in the changelog.

Message to all: Thanks for all the comments!
- - - - - - - -
NOTE: This can be seen as an extension to Knotify, because it already exists in some way, but Knotify isn't very good :)
- - - - - - - -

Example: popups from Kopete are pretty ugly :)
and popups from other applications don't look like it.
They could also overlap eachother and yadi-yadi-yadi

I suggest a notification program where all the "popups"
(notifications) have the same look and animation,
ofcourse the look/animation/sound can be adjusted PER application.

In CAES control module (works through config files) you would be able to set what the default look is,
and an edited look/animation/sound per application/action you wish to use with CAES.

This can be done for alot of applications. The process will be made as easy as possible for developers.

Also, this is something that should be integrated together with [opens new tab *god thank for tabs*] this idea: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33673
(Tasks Info in Less Windows)

Give your thoughts!

Changelog:

#### 01/05/2006 ####
Project renamed to: Cross Application Event Server (CAES)
We have a wiki on line for new ideas and development: http://caes.os-forge.net/wiki/

#### 30/04/2006 ####
There haven't been many updates, I know!
But there is big news.
We are going to try to make this project reality!

Independent of KDE or any desktop,
we are going to create a server called CAES (Cross Application Event Server or maybe Cross Application Event System to refer to the whole system).

This server will work together with clients to show the popups. We are going to make it very easy for developers to integrate CAES with their application.

We're still brainstorming.
But hopefully a website will be up soon enough.

Oh, the guy that's going to do most of the programming: Tony Wolf (dragon-fire)

 Knotify exists

But the popup has some disadvantages, so sometimes, an app use there own popup.

Okay, but I'm hoping for notifications to be added for every application in every style you want,
for example you could say:

Kopete - Receive new IM --> Show THIS notification, edit it a little to your needs and put "$NAME says:" here, "$TEXT" here, etc...

(functions for KDE apps should be integrated, functions for other apps should be done through something else, but I'm not really sure how we'll take care of that in the real environment... I thought of DCOP calls and stuff like that? Idk..)

I would like to see this too. I created my own mockup, but it looks similiar to yours.

Image: http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/9141/preview0du.png
Flash: http://img158.imageshack.us/my.php?image=demo7vu.swf

Inspiration from http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=28476 .

I don't know if I have to say anything. It looks like the MSN Messenger's popup box. Click on the "X"-button to close the box. The action when you click inside the boxes depend on the application the box belongs to (e.g click kopete box to raise the chat window).

You should be able to change duration, position etc.

I would love such a box for kopete. But I'm not sure I would like to have it instead of amaroK's OSD - it's not really the same thing.

So let the user decide wether he wants to use the enhanced knotify OR amaroK's OSD (or both)

PS: I also uploaded your mockups :)

I don't like the notification stuff as much, take a look at growl for osx, that's beautiful! However I think the windeco you made is great! Try porting in to kde 3.5, I'd use it!

I'm no OSX user, but I'll check Growl out to see how we can make this idea better! Thanks for the tip.

I made the windeco really fast, I didn't really mean it to look good :)
But since you like it, I might put some time in porting it to a windeco for KDE 3.5.x or for deKorator,
it would be my first windeco..

 Knotify

by BCMM on: Mar 23 2006

Score 50%

As has been pointed out, Knotify exist already, and should probably be extended rather than replaced.

Knotify is pretty good ATM; for example you can pass HTML (or more normally, the very similar XML which QT uses) to it with dcop and have it pop up in the corner. Kopete doesn't use knotify because they want to have buttons on the popup, AFAIK.

However, there are some features that would be nice in KDE 4's knotify, like themability and a cleverer approach to showing more than one notification at once.

bash-2.05b# cat /dev/mem | strings | grep -i llama
Damn, my RAM is full of llamas!

of course it would be a better idea to extend Knotify, I'll make note of this too!

But the idea stays the same: it should be improved!

-> interactive
-> themable
-> easy plugin architecture thing

I checked out Growl just a bit and it seems pretty good, but what makes it so special? Because it doesn't seem 'that' special to me.
