Description:

APT is one of those things that just makes linux super swell. There is one problem with APT though. This concerns the adding of repositories.

In Ubuntu, as an example, there is often the need to add a new repository if you want a major upgrade of a program, like from KDE 3.4.x to 3.5.x. And every time there is a long explanation of how you add a repository.

It is much harder than it has to be to add a repository. What I'm thinking of is a repository file that you can download and simply add by typing
#> apt-get add [filename]
or simply doubleclick in X to add.

This file would contain the following posibilities:
o Adding one or more repositories
o Replacing one or more obsolete repositories
o Containing the key that the packages are signed with

There are probably lots of possibilities that I havent thought of, but this is definitly a start.

Again... I'm practicing my gimp.. really!

 Not for official KDE

This shouldn't be part of the official KDE release because not everyone uses a debian based distro. But instead it should be made into a seperate app, maybe even just a service menu. Shouldn't be too hard to make.

Cheers,

 Totally agree

I totally agree with you.I should have been more explicit about this.

The reason for bringin it on KDE4 Brainstorm is that I've tried sending the ideas to the debian maintainers of apt and the author of adept but havent gotten an answer from anyone.

But I wanted my idea out in the open. Now it is, and I hope somebody else sees the possibilities

You still can. There's an Edit link right under Subscription. Use it.

in suse, you can click on an rpm and it opens in konqueror with a yast kioslave thing. you can click a button there and it will add the rpms directory as a yast repository.

 Sounds familiar

I had the same idea about repository files, this time it was for yum (similar to apt, used on fedora core and red hat).

But the people seemed to be unresponsive about that, the bug report is still there, an nothing indicates that anyone likes this idea. I do not get why the distributions do not think more about this stuf... :-/

Btw.: This is nothing which is in the scope of KDE, because KDE has to be distribution agnostic. It is a problem of the distributions.

I think someone is already working on that... as a working applet. No need to nclude that in the next release of KDE, then.
