Description:

Keep is a simple backup system for KDE.

The principe is pretty simple: you choose a directory to backup, you choose the directory in which you want to backup it, you set up some options (eg. frequency) and it's done! Of course you can add later some other directories.

A daemon will after take care of automatically perform backups when it's needed.

When the time comes, Keep offers you a simple wizard to recover a previously backuped directory.

It uses rdiff-backup (http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/) as backend.

Version 0.3.0 adds error, logging and notification management.

Keep still need some motivated C++/Qt coders. There is some important tasks to do: improve the log viewer, improve the notification system, implement the include and exclude file management, implement the network located backup mode...

Changelog:

VERSION 0.4.0
ADD: possibility to use an inclusion/exclusion list when setting up backup source
ADD: possibility to control rdiff-backup process priority
ADD: Restore backup wizard now displays last backup date
FIX: Backup every hour bug fixed

 Nifty

Ah, that's nifty. Currently I'm doing exactly the same with tar && fcron. I'm going to check this out sometime.

But why do you require unsermake. For me it's not a big deal, but I don't know how many users have unsermake. What's wrong with autoto.. eh.. never mind :)

Thank for the comment! You're right cuurently, Keep behaves preety much the same than a fine tuned tar and cron but in the future, advanced features will be added (look at the TODO) which I hopes will be very useful and quit the problem of data management of the user mind.

This program is cool!

You said it's looking for a webmaster? ;)
I would offer myself as a web developer if you have got webspace and a design. ;)

 Nice one

I'd use it for my backups to external devices if it had support for rsync (and it's options).
Would be really great if you could include this as backup option in one of your next releases.

It's a really good idea. I will inspect rsync and see if I can integrate it in the next major release of Keep.

nice done.
showing/configuring the time when the next backup will be done would be good.

Thanks for the packages! You can already see when the next backup will be done in the Informations tab (next backup date).

Yes, I have seen that but I would like to see the time, additional to the date. I don't know how keep manages the backup cycle but if it sets up a defined time I would like to see/configure it.
Btw. it is not that important.

Ok I see what you mean. At the moment, Keep has its own KDED daemon which watch the backup directory at startup and every hour. So in the worse case, you'll have to wait 60 minutes to have your backup done, but in general the backup is made at startup.

 rsync

by wbsoft on: Dec 29 2005

I use a recent rsync with the --link-dest option. It makes a new (dated) tree for every backup, but hardlinks unchanged files (to an older backup of the same tree). The backup-trees are on another hard disk. This works great, as navigating old files and recovering them (or recovering older versions) is very easy.

It would be nice if Keep could support such a setup (even just use rsync in the background).

 KDED failure

by HessiJames on: Dec 30 2005

Score 50%

Hm, it seems that keep has it's own kde demon. is that right?
After a restart of my machine keep couldn't connect to the demon. (Error message something like "couldn't connect to KDED"). But the big problem was that all the other demons weren't running, too. (e.g. kwallet).
After removing keep and a kde restart everything worked well.
I'm using suse 9.3 and kde 3.5.0.
