 consistency is good

The hard part is going to get everyone to agree on a standard. What's the chance we can get KDE, Gnome, and desktop environments standardized on one set of icons. Very slim.

I've already heard comments like "I won't use these! I won't stand for the gnome-ification of KDE!"

In my experience, Tango's goals don't include the gnome-ification of KDE by any means. Some of the artists involved are, or have been, contributors to the GNOME project and others, hence the familiar styles. Keep in mind, contributions and criticism are welcome.
It's the overall goal, a unified icon naming scheme, that I find important. This would allow an icon theme author to release a theme once and expect it to work on all desktop environments that support the Standard Icon Naming Specification. In some ways, the Tango icon theme can be thought of as an implementation of this proposed specification.

I'm glad you point this out. I think Tango is much misunderstood -- if everyone agrees on the standard we can "KDEify" Gnome applications as much as they "Gnomify" a KDE application.

Even if the default implementation takes on the more muted Gnome colour palette, there is no reason to dismiss this as useful progress for KDE.

i don't see what tango does more than any other icontheme. a unified naming scheme? we already have that, as a freedesktop standard no less. and tango just follows that. the tools to transform other iconsets are cool, yes. and the icons themselves aren't bad either, but not that revolutionary (not for KDE, that is. for gnome, it is really much better than their previous icon themes).

No, there is no existing icon naming spec at freedesktop.org just yet, though there will be soon. There is the existing icon *theme* spec, which the proposed icon naming spec hopes to compliment.

They look fine on my GNOME desktop but not so good on KDE, so I won't be using them on KDE even tough I think they are really nice icons.

Hello,

Sorry for being so dumb, but does anybody have an idiot-proof guide about what to do with these two patches? I like these icons and the idea behind Tango, but I have no idea what to do with these two additional files.

An icon naming standard is certainly needed, especially with MIME type icons.

FreeDesktop.org is the place that this should be developed.

The icon naming spec is actually in cvs at freedesktop.org. Hopefully, it will soon be hosted at http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Standards
along the the other desktop-related specs.

there already is an icon naming spec on freedesktop.org, no tango needed here.

i don't see why the gnomes come up with the tango site, saying it is a *crossplatform* (but only gnomes involved, at least until the first announcement) icontheme and specification (they just took the freedesktop.org one).

don't say something is crossplatform/crossdesktop/whatever if no other desktop than you is involved (that's like microsoft saying their new XML document format is a standard, while the REAL standard, ODF, IS developed with several involved users like Koffice and OpenOffice).

and don't say YOU create a specification while you just took it from the freedesktop.org site...

Right. I've just realised you posted twice, and you're obviously misinformed. It's usually a good idea to to do some checking before saying something that's not true. My only involvement with Tango project has been to submit patches to allow the icon theme to work on KDE. I've posted about it here because I thought KDE users might like to know the theme is also intended to work on KDE.

I've tried to be very clear with the instructions. There were some changes to the way the icon naming utils are installed. I'll update the instructions shortly.
I've decided against adding a typical icon theme since that seems to defeat the overall purpose.

I get the over all purpose of the Tango Project, ... but just like u get the source and the binaries ... you could package a version for the standard Kde desktop. Make things easier for the naive user ...

Anyways i've done the packaging myself for my use ... and for my friends, but i dont know if its all fine.

Thanks man.
