Kopete KTTS Plugin

   1.3.0

KDE Accessibility Application

Description:

This is a plugin for Kopete, that let's you use the KTextToSpeech subsystem in various ways.
It can announce messages (including saying the senders name), read messages and announce status changes (again, including saying the contacts name). It is also highly configurable: global settings can be overridden on a per contact basis, each contacts name can be overridden internally to set it to something properly pronounced by the subsystem. A properly set up KTTS subsystem is required.

Changelog:

new in 1.3.0:

- for those who really want it: it can also read outgoing messages now :)
- new option to only announce/read messages if they start a new chat session, so you won't be bothered by consecutive messages

sorry, no localized status announcements yet :(

It would be nice if this plugin was configurable to not speak the message while the user is away, or while the current chat is in the foreground.

It would also be nice if the plugin could be configured to omit the text announce message if multiple messages arrive from the same contact within a certain time period (perhaps 1 minute).

Also, it would be nice if the entire string (text to announce messages, and the messages themselves) were sent to the speaking engine as one whole string. This would allow the user to configure ktts to play a female voice for female contacts, and male voices for male contacts. It would probably also do away with the pause between the announce message and the message itself, which is pretty annoying. As it is, only the text to announce messages will play in a specialized voice, and the message itself plays in the default voice*.

Other than those issues, this plugin is looking pretty good!

[*]For those of you wondering where to configure this. Open kttsmgr (its probably in the system tray). Then, under the 'talkers' tab add all voices you want available. Then, under 'filters' add a talker chooser filter and set 'Text contains' to the name of the contact you want to match, and the application to kopete. Then choose the voice you want associated.

We've just updated the Ark Linux package to 1.3.0 -- Ark Linux users simply apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade

Others in need of an rpm may try their luck with

 Continued Development/Updates?

I installed this plugin Kopete 0.12 on KDE 3.5.9, and I love it!

Is it possible to add it to Kopete 0.60 for KDE 4.1.2? Does there exist a version of this plugin that is compatible with newer versions of Kopete?

Hi,
at least in kopete 0.60.3 you can set up
speech in "settings" - "configure notifications" - though it speaks a lot of brackets... ;/
