Description:

KTranslator is a program to translate words from one language to another.

Now, I create a program (dictconv) to convert a dictionary from one format do another, like a sdict to stardict. The program requires zlib and libxml2.

The program supports conversion from Babylon glossaries (.bgl) to stardict. I think this is the unique GPL program that handles Babylon glossaries at moment.

Thanks to Karl Grill (for the reverse engineering) and Ricardo Villalba (from Wordtrans) it is now possible.

More formats will come soon.

Changelog:

Dictconv
---------

0.2
---
Fix several bug mainly in Babylon glossary reader
Add CMake support (you can build the package with GNU tools or CMake now)
Add support to convert to plain text dictionaries
Add support to convert to DICT dictionaries

Fix a bug in Babylon plugin
Fix a bug in StarDict plugin

 Simular Program

You may want to have a look at Ksteak English German translator. It may give you ideas for your more robust program.

IMHO KSteak is meanwhile pretty useless (and it was never good at all). I prefer the program DING. The only thing I dislike about it, is that it uses Tk, so I appreciate progies like KTranslator (keep on with the good work;)

Thanks.
Actually, I knew the KSteak because KTranslator is inspired in Klicklack that is based in KSteak. Well, KSteak is a specific translation program, English to German, and Ktranslator is more generic (any to any), but sure that I can get something useful.

 Feature request

Would be nice if KTranslator had a plugin for using Dict servers. As soon as it has, I will stop using KDict. =)

A plugin for DICT servers is pretty easy to do. I have coded one before, but I thought that a plugin that reads the .dict files directly would be more useful.
Well, no problem. I will create this plugin again. Look for it in a future version.

same here... I use gentoo and kde 3.4.2 But nothing happens after selecting a word. I tried different dictionaries, but it won't do the job. No errors nor other informations to locate the problem.

LOL... during I typed this message, I pressed the ctrl-Key and selected a word and *plong* the popup appears (after a few seconds)... Maybe I oversight that I have to press a hot-Key, but now it works ;) Great!

Keep going on with your work. Just fine program!

*ThumbsUp*

Thanks, with the Ctrl key, there is a popup (^_^)

But now, with the babylon dic, I have a error message : "libbab incorrectly initialized"

Where I can find this librairie or why I have this error ?

Do you have selected the files correctly? You should have the english.dic file and engtoXXX.dic file in the same directory and you have to choose the engtoXXX.dic, not the english.dic.
libbab is part of the code, so you don't have to install it.

Sorry, first I try at first with *.BGL babylon dictionaries which are not supported.

With the *.dic files, it's OK (^_^)

I think that the problem is I forgot to highlight that you should select the word while pressing .
This is to avoid KTranslator try to translate everything you select.
If this is not the problem, please, try to contact me by email.

A typo error. You should select the word while pressing CTRL key.

 Great!!!

Thanks for this allready (for a 0.1 release) usefull program.

I waited for this progras very long thanks. Off course I have a few suggestions and there to seems to be a bug.

Suggestions:
1. Be able to select words (translations) so you can paste it somewhere else.
2. Be able to change the font and font size of the popup.
3. Be able to turn off extra info about the word. Only the translation.
4. Be able to translate whole sentences.
5. Be able to use knewstuff to download dictionaries.
6. Using transparancy.

Bugs:
1. I can't delete dictionaries. I have to it by hand using the ktranslatorrc-file.
2. I don't understand the ctrl-key, sometimes it doesn't work and sometimes it says "no plugins selected". 90% off the time though it pops-up OK.

Thats it. Keep up the great work and thanks again.

Cheers,

J

Suggestions:

1. I don't understand. The selected word goes to clipboard.
2. TODO
3. TODO
4. This is very hard. I don't think this can be done in this decade. :( There are some syntax interpreter projects already started, but all in alpha stage.
5. TODO
6. TODO

Bugs:

1. Did you select one dictionary before trying to delete? Clicking in delete without select anything crashs the program. This is a bug already fixed.

2. This is because I have to hack the clipboard. As X11 don't has clipboard notification and qt doesn't notify selection changes in non-qt applications, I have to write this hack. The bug is you can't select a word twice.

Suggestions:

1. I mean the translation of other output.
4. Yes I understand, was wishful thinking :-)

Bugs:

1. Yes I selected the dict. I tried also many times (without a crash) btw.
2. Yes I noticed that "twice" to. That gives me another suggestion:

Be able to change the ctrl-key to the alt or shift key. The reason is that I use ctrl+c sometimes and than the translation pops-up at e a moment I don't want it.

Cheers and thanks for your reply,

J

 Hebrew dict - failed

by zarn on: Aug 18 2007

Score 50%

I used dictconv to convert the Babylon dictionaries. These were made by Babylon themselves.
he2en failed with memory dump.
en2he yielded an unreadable dictionary - the entries were there, but it seemed dictconv picked wrong codepage on conversion. Addfitionally, each English entry was suffixed by $<random number$.

Great work, but it seems much tweaking lies ahead.
