I don't know the cause of this problem but I found a way to walk around it.

1- Extract the archive
2- Move only the folder named "Bootsplash_theme" to "/etc/bootsplash/themes"
3- Rename it "matrix-splash"
4- Configure through Yast as it was said before
5- when you run mkinitrd you will see a long line which tells "mkinitrd cannot find /etc../matrix-splah/..."
6- make a symbolic link named "matrix-splah" to "matrix-splash" in the "/etc/bootsplash/themes/" folder.
7- run mkinitrd again and restart your computer.

Enjoy the new bootsplash.

This is due to a typo in the path to the bootsplash image in the config file. It's missing an "s" so it points to /etc/bootsplash/themes/matrix-splah. This will only happen if you have 1024x768 resolution because the config files for the other resolutions are correct. I'm sure the previous solution works (thanks uyoruk!) but if you are anal-retentive like me:

1- Extract the archive
2- Move only the folder named "Bootsplash_theme" to "/etc/bootsplash/themes"
3- Rename it "matrix-splash"
4- Configure through Yast as it was said before
5- Open this file with text editor: /etc/bootsplash/themes/matrix-splash/config/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg
6- Go to about line 22 and where it says "jpeg=" add the missing "s" in the path and save
7- run mkinitrd (no errors) and restart your computer

Have fun! :)
