 How about Kuroo

Maybe you can work together with Kuroo

http://tux.myftp.org/wikka/wikka.php?wakka=HomePage

to make a full Gentoo tool-set?

Maybe ;) KGentooConf is a global (in the future) configuration tool. Kuroo only works with portage. Thanx.

Here is a patch to add in 3 missing portage features I use.
http://smileaf.org/files/kgentooconf_add-missing-features.patch

Only other bug I've noticed is that your USE parser can't handle multiple lines.

Thanx a lot for the patch.
USE parser works fine with lines ends in \. Another style of end of line?

Never had to add \ at the end before.
perhaps their parser has spoiled me? ;)

Which end of line have you before? KGentooConf eliminates all end of lines with the form \ before save first time. KGentoo works and saves multilines in one line.
Thanx.

 In far future :)

At present this utility is not really useful for me.

Some possible features that would make it attractive to me ;)

Don't forget the very useful files:

/etc/portage/package.keywords
/etc/portage/package.mask
/etc/portage/package.unmask
/etc/portage/package.use

In fact, /etc/make.conf USE flags should be seldom used and should only present a small generic subset (trust me, speaking from experience here ;) ). It's dangerous to also use the dev keywords (ie "~x86") globally. It's far better to use USE/KEYWORDS flags on a package-by-package basis in the above mentioned files.

Also note the 'equery' functionality, you can now query what use flags a package uses and what use flags are available. If you could link that into your utility and then populate the /etc/portage files, that woulud indeed be a powerful GUI.

KGentooConf is in very, very earlier version. A lot of changes in GUI are in my mind and a lot of new features to work with all configuration files for Gentoo Linux... But this is a lot of work and I am newbie in QT...
Stay tunned! :)
Thanx for your recomendations.

 Network devices...

Hi
Great to see an app like this.

I think it would be better, to have a list of network-devices which are selectable... but don't display the whole options dialog for each network device.

Another nice thing would be SSH support, to configure remote machines.

Greetings

Elias P.

Nice idea with combo. Usually, a user only have one or two network cards, and KGentooConf can add more cards from Extra section, but I think that with a combo box its a result more easy.

And nice idea with remote control, too. But this is a far, far future ;)

Thanx a lot.

Regards.

 kde widgets?

by smileaf on: Jul 27 2005

I tried to do a little more work on your program however everytime I try to use a KDE widget it segfaults.

I started a new project within kdevelop and kde widgets do work there

so while I was bored without internet I had a little fun making my own little conf gui.
I got the make.conf fully done. even with a little better, IMO, parser. it handles multiple lines even without the \ at the end.

I also started to play around with a profile chooser. very much so incomplete as I have yet to figure out how to read/write a symlink and get where it points to.

USE selector needs a little more work I'd love to embed a combobox within the klistview that I have for the enabled mode.

Gotten a lot of ideas just reading the man pages. One such idea is the ability to limit the directories sync'ed

Seeing this recent update to yours I've gotten another idea. Perhaps doing some sort of a plugin system might be good for all the different extra's that can be installed. There are many config files that gentoo can use. but having all of them inside 1 project might be a little messy. So if we extended the ability to a plugin system those extras that people would use would be there for them and not be for those that'll never even want to see them.

If you'd like to take a look at mine here it is:
http://smileaf.org/files/kgentooconf2.kdevelop-0.1.tar.gz
This is that new project I started to test out the kde widgets. It's named kgentooconf2 as to not confuse it with yours.
that's 3-4 days of work. Use what you want(if you want all of it go for it!). Hopefully this'll help with ideas to make an awesome GUI config tool for us all :)

I've also tried to email you a while ago but I never got a response?

Hi smileaf.

Thanx a lot for your contribution.

I sent you an e-mail few days ago to answer your two e-mails. Didn't you received?

Regards.

KGentooConf is dependant of QT and isn't from KDE. So I only use QT widgets.
I don't have time to see your work: my monitor crash last day so I will buy another in a few days... so KGentooConf development is stoped (only a few days!! ;))
Regards.
