Description:

nuoveXT is an icon theme for GNOME and KDE.

This is my first attempt of creating an icon theme. There is still a lots to do, but I thought I could share what I've done so far. Made entirely with Inkscape.

A big THANKS to:

- Inkscape: what a great tool! :D
- Ubuntu, Linux and Open Source in general
- All the other GNOME and KDE artists who have inspired me and specially everaldo (http://www.everaldo.com/) which is, I think, simply the best icon designer out there ;-)
- Open Clip Art Library (http://openclipart.org/).
- DeviantArt: One of the best place for inspiration and artworks.
- pwsp.net for hosting my project.

Constructive feedbacks are more than welcome ;-)

Enjoy!

Saki

 Really great!

I consider myself a little picky and conservative on these kind of eyecandy stuff, but this icons set got me all the way.

Thanks a lot for the great work!

 2.0 coming?

by scream on: Aug 29 2005

Is there a 2.0 or sth. similar coming soon? Because, I use your iconset for a pretty long time now, but there are still some icons missing in 1.5: An opera icon, icons for kget, kmail etc. Especially many icons inside the applications haven't been done yet.

I would love to see this icontheme as a standard for KDE4. I mean, just take a look at the mockups and screenshots here, nearly everyone who loves eyecandy uses your iconset. You're the standard in icon-eyecandy on KDE now!

So please keep up the good work and create all the icons needed to replace Crystal with nuoveXT!

I think nuoveXT won't be the default icon set for KDE with this license:

Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License

The word "NonCommercial" makes this license unfree in the sense of the defintion of free software in debian or if you don't like/trust debian in the sense of opensource.org

I don't blame the author for chosing this license, it's his good right, but it's also the reason, that we only have 1.1 in debian which was under gpl.

 rip-off?

by dave on: Sep 1 2005

I'm sorry to tell that actually that many icons are looking a lot like a rip-off from other icon sets: Folder design are too much close to latest Windows Vista previews (http://forevergeek.com/windows/windows_vista_beta_screenshots.php)., , but it can also be a recursive rip-off of iTollbar Folders as you can see at http://iconbase.com/#. It seems like your are also using the same desktop image used for the windows vista previews :) . The home icon is very much similar to Mac OS X home icon. You seems to have talent, you probably can came out with something more original if you want. It's normal take inspiration of other artwork and so, but this time the folders are just a copy of another artwork.

I totally agree. It's a good theme but not a theme that could be the default for KDE4 since it has some rips of Windows Vista and MacOS X.
The default KDE4 theme as well as the default widget theme and layout must be something new, not a rip of Microsoft or Apple's work.

Just want to say that I don't care if those folder icons are rip-off or not because they are the most beautiful folder icons I have seen so far. IMHO this is a very good looking icon set (especially the color choices are great) and I actually enjoy using it. Thanks!!!!

OMG
This is terribly true. I cannot believe it. And it is so highly rated. IMO the author should delete this theme from KDE-Look.

lol! There's over than 500 icons in the set and because two of them are looking too much like an existing icons I should delete the set from kde-look?!

Those two are icons that I really like so I decided to recreate similar ones in Svg format. I was just experiencing with inkscape, sorry for sharing my results... ;-)

I just think it's funny that there's hundreds of people who Actually rips some content from windows and apple and never get blamed ;-(

Like I mentionned in an other post:

If Mico$oft (or Apple or even iconbase.com) want me to take those two icons out of the set, then I'll be glad to do so.

 Excellent

I have a problem with the toolbar icons. They show up small on my toolbars even when i have them set to medium. Screenshot http://luketopia.net/nuovext.jpg if somebody could please help.

A criticism I have is that some of the gray/white icons are hard to see/make out against a gray window color (e.g. Klipper, KMenu, New, Print).

I think this should definately be one of the themes included in KDE 4, along with the default Oxygen, Crystal Clear as a replacement for Crystal SVG, and Noia.

Saying that these icons are "rip offs" is pretty dumb. Linux/BSD are "rip offs" of UNIX. KDE is a rip off of Windows/Mac/CDE which are all originally rip offs of Xerox. As long as you're incorporating ideas, and not actually copying verbatim, it seems fine to me. That is the whole idea behind free software - ideas can be reused.
