Amarok Script

Submitted:  Mar 24 2005
Updated:  Oct 3 2006

Description:

This script was written as a vehicle for learning python, I'm open to suggestions, comments and anything not overly abusive. With disclaimer out of
the way, forward with the details: this script will start a small server from within amaroK and serve music streams on a specified port. Stream sources are configurable: current options are for "live" streams as well as a snapshotted playlist. This works with a bevy of different user agents.

Comments and feedback will be much appreciated.

Changelog:

Oct 3, 2006
* fixed unsupported operand error on startup
+ added README.

Aug 30, 2005
- fixed executable bits on non-executable files

Aug 28, 2005
- beta2 Bumped to 0.2.0

0.2.0 beta2, 2005
- Added fix from ShadowFiend
- Tweaked static playlist management. Static playlist clients should now *never* be dropped because of buffer underruns.

0.2.0-beta, 2005
August 12th
Added link to 0.2.0-beta. This is somewhat experimental. It works for me, but as I don't currently have access to a machine with Winamp/WMP I'm posting this as a beta to see if any problems come up. This includes fixes for client side buffer-overruns which result in a repeat of the trailing 10% of each song, and some simple burst-on-connect handling. These changes will be committed to amaroK SVN when I get my DSL at home up and running.

*June 23, 2005 update*
- Re-uploaded 0.1.4. It looks like it never made it there the first time.

 It\'s great!

I have tried Icecast/Ices, but that was to difficult for me. When I saw this script I thought: Yet another hard-to-configure(for newbies like me)-script, but I'll give it a try.

And.. it just worked! I'm very happy - thank you very much! And keep on with great work!

This works for Pocket Tunes for Palm. Now you can listen to your amaroK on-the-go (or at least, any where in range of a wireless network). ;)

 Not streaming :(

First of all it's a great idea. :)

I tried to use this script for streaming, and xmms as client. Unfortunately it does not stream well. xmms waits for streaming, the debug log shows that streaming starts and suddenly it drops the client. (Dropping socket to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. Active sockets: 0)

 Version mismatch?

by econan on: Jun 21 2005

Hi,

I see that on the description field you have a version 0.1.4 but when I click download I get the version 0.1.3. Did you simply forgot to update the version number on the file or am I missing something? :)

Thanks!

(The filename is 2170-Shouter-0.1.4.tar.bz2)

And immensely superior (for the average user to say the least) to shoutcast/icecast and the like. Keep up the good work!

 sync

Very easy to use, thanks!

I have a question:
What would it take to make this a sync solution, i.e. to make two computers play the music synchronized at all times? This would be cool in a house or an office with several computers.

Is it a "ground up"-thing, or can someone/me use this as the base?

The big barriers that I see with this are:
- client buffering. Every user agent that I've looked at has a unique notion of stream buffering. While the data being sent to the clients might be synchronized, clients might be reading from different buffer positions. You could write a very simple non-buffering UA in python that might suit your needs.

-stream throttling done by Shouter. The current model restricts the data based on file position, which won't work very well when sending VBR files to non-buffering clients.

For LAN streaming, I have no doubt that there are easier and more effective methods for synchronized streaming.
