Description:

This wizard will help you create high quality backups of DVD movies to XviD format.

It is supposed to be the opposite of the famous DVD:Rip tool: Easy to use, a minimal amount of adjustable settings and automatic detection of the optimal values of almost all adjustable settings. It should produce very high quality rips, even if you have no idea what the settings mean and just use it in the next-next-next-finish way.

The wizard supports title and language selection, AC3 stream copy or MP3 audio, single or two-pass encoding and automatic splitting at scene boundaries.

DVD Rip-O-Matic can also generate executable ripping scripts. This allows you to run it as a background process, end your KDE session and go to bed.

It has not been tested very well yet, so please tell me if it works for you.

Requirements:

* Kommander 1.0 ( Part of KDEWebDev package, version 3.3.x )

* Recent Transcode

* Recent MPlayer version with support for DVD reading, DVD decryption, LAME MP3 encoding and XviD encoding. MPlayer version 1.0rc5 and newer versions are known to work perfectly.

This release features a custom target size for the generated AVI file. This is very useful when you want to rip multiple titles and make them fit on a single CD or DVD.

Special thanks goes to Tijmen Collignon for having me borrow some of his messy NTSC disks.

Changelog:

VERSION 0.9 (March 4th 2005)

* Initial release

VERSION 0.91 (March 7th 2005)

* Updated some untranslated strings
* Updated installer to work when KDEDIR not set

VERSION 0.92

* Check if MPlayer supports XviD on startup
* Attempt to rip NTSC movies properly

VERSION 0.93

* Fixed installer to detect KDE path

VERSION 0.94 ( November 13th 2005 )

* Possibility to specify custom target file size
* Check for availability of MEncoder, Konsole and KDialog
* Some UI logic improvements

VERSION 0.95 ( October 7th 2006 )

* Add support for copying subtitles
* Fix detection of DTS Soundtracks
* Fix DVD movies with both DolbyDigital and DTS
* Minor layout/graphics updates

 Multiple title rip

 by yarlie on: Apr 2 2005

Score 50%

I didn't install the program yet, but from the screenshots I conclude it isn't possible to rip more than 1 title at the same time. Excuse me if it is possible, but if it aint, i'd like to ask you to add this feature for the following reason: when ripping a dvd with a couple of episodes of a show (let's say fawlty towers ;-)) and you're not planning on sitting in front of your computer all time to make it rip the next one, it would come in handy if you were able to say 'rip all these episodes while i'm sleeping'. Again, excuse me for not testing the program first.
(For the rest: keep up the good work!)

DVD Rip-O-Matic can generate shell scripts that do the ripping. So, you can run these scripts as background processes at night if you like. You can also concatenate multiple scripts and run them all sequentially while you are away.

But i can't run it nor installing it. I saw the readme file and follow the instructions, but nothing happened. The installer.kdmr or dvdripomatic.kdmr appear as a text file, and when i try to click twice over them, kwrite opens and nothing happens.I even made them executable by marking a thing in the options, but the problem doesn't disappear. What can i do?

I didn't read i needed kommander app. Well, now i know how to run it, but it tells me i haven't got mplayer with xvid support, and the program closes. I don't know what can i do...this time is a little bit confusing, because i checked mplayer for it, and it has the xvid plugin @_@

 Something else cool

Lets say that you are backing up your DVD's to a large harddrive, not cd's. It would be cool to do variable bitrate quality based encoding. This is possible with transcode, but I have not been able to make it work.

Basically, instead of picking a size to shrink the movie to, one picks a minimal level of quality for all of the frames and the final movie size is what it is, but the whole thing looks good.

I will consider adding an option 'Unlimited Space' to the storage media list which rips the movie at maximum quality.

 sound is off

hi, very nice script..
that's pretty much the only thing i use.
one repeating problem though - the sound is off (meaning not synced with the video).
how can i help you fix it? do you wanna see the generated script?
is there an option that i might be missing?
thanks,

Well, there is nothing in DVD Rip-O-Matic that controls A/V sync. MEncoder is responsible for doing this.

Please try a different version of MPlayer/MEncoder.

0.9.2's checking of XVID enabled mencoder made me compile mplayer with XVID, real, and other important things.

Thank you now this is the First Application in Linux (for me) which is successfully ripping my DVD :)

 Problem running prog

 by fogbugz on: Jun 9 2005

I am having the same issue that nobita mentioned in an earlier thread. I have installed the KDEWebDev package which supposedly includes kommander, but when I double click on the .kmdr files they just open in a text editor. I am a newbie and not a programmer so any help is appreciated. P.S. I am running Fedora Core 3.

Thx

That is a distribution problem. Can't help you there. You can also run the Kommander Editor from the KDE Menu and run the wizard from there.
