Description:

This wizard will help you create high quality backups of DVD movies to XviD format.

It is supposed to be the opposite of the famous DVD:Rip tool: Easy to use, a minimal amount of adjustable settings and automatic detection of the optimal values of almost all adjustable settings. It should produce very high quality rips, even if you have no idea what the settings mean and just use it in the next-next-next-finish way.

The wizard supports title and language selection, AC3 stream copy or MP3 audio, single or two-pass encoding and automatic splitting at scene boundaries.

DVD Rip-O-Matic can also generate executable ripping scripts. This allows you to run it as a background process, end your KDE session and go to bed.

It has not been tested very well yet, so please tell me if it works for you.

Requirements:

* Kommander 1.0 ( Part of KDEWebDev package, version 3.3.x )

* Recent Transcode

* Recent MPlayer version with support for DVD reading, DVD decryption, LAME MP3 encoding and XviD encoding. MPlayer version 1.0rc5 and newer versions are known to work perfectly.

This release features a custom target size for the generated AVI file. This is very useful when you want to rip multiple titles and make them fit on a single CD or DVD.

Special thanks goes to Tijmen Collignon for having me borrow some of his messy NTSC disks.

Changelog:

VERSION 0.9 (March 4th 2005)

* Initial release

VERSION 0.91 (March 7th 2005)

* Updated some untranslated strings
* Updated installer to work when KDEDIR not set

VERSION 0.92

* Check if MPlayer supports XviD on startup
* Attempt to rip NTSC movies properly

VERSION 0.93

* Fixed installer to detect KDE path

VERSION 0.94 ( November 13th 2005 )

* Possibility to specify custom target file size
* Check for availability of MEncoder, Konsole and KDialog
* Some UI logic improvements

VERSION 0.95 ( October 7th 2006 )

* Add support for copying subtitles
* Fix detection of DTS Soundtracks
* Fix DVD movies with both DolbyDigital and DTS
* Minor layout/graphics updates

Hi, heres the code I enter to install but it bombs out with the following error:

[nathan@holly DVDRipOMatic]$ kmdr-executor Installer.kmdr
KommanderFactory::loadPlugins - Can't load Kommander plugin library libkommanderwidgets

Anyone have a solution?

This is a KDE 3.4 problem.

Maybe you use the new Kommander Release Candidate on stable KDE?

Anyway, please ask on the Kommander mailing list. They can tell you more than I can. The only thing I know is that it works perfectly on KDE 3.3.x with Kommander 1.0 (the Kommander version that comes with KDEWebDev 3.3.x).

RipOMatic spits out "Mplayer does not support Xvid" when there is no mencoder installed. This is kinda confusing... :)

Maybe you should check for mencoder prior to xvid support.

Nice app though :)

 awesome!

Well, for the complete simplicity and hand-holding ability of this program it's very impressive.
So far it has worked perfectly on 2 different mixed mode NTFS movies.

Requests if you need directions to go in:
In the media-size drop-down, allow the user to input a custom size in MB instead of being bound to the large increments.
OGG support (with user-enterable quality rating)
MP3 support VBR bitrate/user inputable bit rate settings
Allow the user to input an Xvid bitrate setting and audio choice without being bound to a final file size
Allow for custom naming of the output file insead of just DVDRippartXofY.avi
Subtitle support
Multiple Audio-Track support (for dual-language movies)

Thanks! awesome little front-end/program

Thanks a lot for your feedback! Always happy to hear that things are working as they should.

Most of the improvements you suggested are on my to-do list, for as far as they don't complicate things too much. DVD Rip-O-Matic should stay as simple as possible, while still flexible enough to get the most common ripping jobs done.

 Problem with KDE3.4

Hi,

I like both KDE DVD Authoring Wizard and DVD Rip-O-Matic but I think there is a problem with these scripts and KDE 3.4. I am using FC3 with the default KDE installation and things seem to work fine, but when I upgraded to KDE3.4 (via konstruct) the DVD Authoring Wizard stopped working... more specifically, the script stopped creating the menus. I am not sure what needs to be done to update this to work with KDE3.4 but both are great and I would like to see them updated!

Keep up the good work!

I have not made the jump to KDE 3.4 yet, so I cannot test or reproduce anything.

Also, the KDE DVD Authoring Wizard has not been publicly released yet (although it is downloadable from my site) because there are some cases of 'ugly programming' that could lead to lots of people running into trouble. As soon as things get solid, I will announce it here on kde-apps.org and try it on KDE 3.4 myself.

 nice values

chalk up a third perfect mixed mode dvd rip

but anyway, another feature request:
would it be possible to make this run with a default nice value of 10 or at least 5 instead of 0? (i know it's easy to set myself but having a default of 10 might help to not lock up slower machines, especially for the 'new' croud you're targetting who might not know as much about priorities)

Nice one.. I will add a 'low process priority' checkbox to the wizard.
