Description:

IKons 0.5 Pro is a hi-color icon theme. This is the professional edition, which means that it doesn't contain all the icons (e.g. the rocket icon isn't included). If you want the full iKons icon theme, you should download iKons 0.5 Home edition.

This release includes 16x16 icons, 22x22 icons, 32x32 icons, 48x48 icons and 64x64 icons for KDE, a KDE icon theme that can be used with the Control Center, as well as a README file that tells you how to install and alter this icon theme.

Changelog:

* Lots of new icons (menu icons, toolbar icons, etc.)
* improved folder icons
* more consistent icons

Here's a small poll: Do you want 'iKons' to be a part of KDE3, and if 'yes':
-iKons should be one of the icon themes (so: you would have a choice between several icon themes in KDE3) (this is what I had in mind for iKons).
-iKons should be the default theme of KDE 3.

Post your opinion on this forum, or mail it to kborrey@skynet.be

But instead of having to rename files to have a different theme, I would like to have several iKons entries for each iKons variant:

- iKons: Netscape
- iKons: Qnix
- iKons: ...

As an additional theme, or integrated with the default theme.

PLEASE first make a version with a more professional look and feel. The Device, Filesystems, most of the Actions, and MIME icons are more than excellent - I think they should become the default icons, personally - but some misc. icons like the the little rocket symbol just looks way too kingergarten, even for a desktop.

iKons has huge potential, but PLEASE O PLEASE O PLEASE make it professional looking! I'm begging on my knees here! It's nealy perfect, just make it a little less cartoonish by taking out ones you wouldn't want on a corporate desktop - or a home desktop by a user over 5 years old (the rocket...hint, hint :o) ).

I had mentioned that thing about the little rocket before, but it seems that not everybody thinks the same, so that it's better not to put pressure on it.

Anyway, it's not difficult to change it. Just do as I did: just change the file ".kde/share/icons/iKons/16x16/actions" to whichever icon you like. I don't actually find any other icon that looks so cartoonish, so this should solve your problem.

...I can change, and in fact did so already. My point is that it should be professional looking "out of the box" if is to be distributed with KDE. One shouldn't have to configure things manually to get a professional-looking desktop; one should have to tinker to get it besides something than a "factory default." And the factory default should be professional looking. When one installs a Linux distribution, it should be ready to go "out of the box" as much as anyone should expect an OS to do so (at least as much as Windows - I've never hadf a hiccup out of Windows 2000). And a proffessional look is part of that. iKons is professional looking, except for things like the rocket.

Thanks for making me aware that the rocket issue is a sensitive one - I'll take your advice and not press it. I remembered someody else before pointing it out, and I thought I'd support that contention.

I strongly feel that things like the rocket should not be a part of the KDE core. If somebody likes it and wants it, then, by all means, let them have it. But don't stick it in by default.

All in all, I think iKons is excellent, and has been excellent - I've been installing them since 0.2 (off and on up until 0.4.x, then like clockwork since). The Device and Filesystem icons are more than excellent, and give KDE a POLISHED, unique look. It's just things like the rocket which undermine the larger polished, professional look.

The author once said he might make two variations of iKons, one professional looking, and one "fun" looking. I don't know what's happened to that. It's an excellent idea, too. Put the pro variation (eg iKons minus the rocket) in Kore by DEFAULT, and package the "fun" variation as an add-in if the user so desires.

 the rocket icon

by kborrey on: Nov 28 2001

Score 50%

it seems that a lot of people think that the rocket icon doesn't look professional ... other people asked me to include the rocket icon in KDE 3 as default ... so: problem! When you don't like the rocket icon, you should delete this icon ... but I think it's a good icon because the rocket represents the launch action. The rocket icon looks "cartoonish", but other KDE icons also look "cartoonish". Torsten Rahn (http://artist.kde.org/introduction.html) describes his icons as being "cartoonish".
The rocket icon will be included in future releases of iKons When there's a new milestone release, I 'll release a seperate package without the rocket icon (iKons Professional). So:
- All future releases of iKons (development and milestone) will include the rocket icon.
- When there's a milestone release of iKons, I'll release a seperate package without the rocket icon (iKons Professional).
Is everybody happy with this solution?

I agree the semantics of the rocket icon fit perfectly - to "launch" an action. In fact, as far as that concept goes, the rocket is probably the best icons concerning semantics. It's just that its, as you said, cartoonish.

Your decision quite makes me quite happy! :o) I say put iKons Pro in KDE any way you can get it in there!

IMHO most of your icons look great, and I use them. However, I want to throw in my 2 cents if the KDE team seriously considers moving to your icon set.
First of all, some of the icons are too similar and may confuse new users. e.g. konsole - control panel - desktop, find - icon size, ... On the other hand, they help to give KDE a more consistent look. The latter is a compliment, and something worth pusuing. If this is your aim, I would seriously consider redesigning some icons like kmail, which need a label to be clear and meaningful.
Just a thought:
What about splitting up your icons into categories at design time (internet / look and feel / folders / docs / utilities / ...) and use a common starting point for all icons in that category; e.g. a globe for all internet-related apps.
Not meant as a rant, I admire your work.

 "find" and "font +/-

Hi,
Great work.
I have only one gripe (so far :-)
The difference between the "find" icon and the "font increase size", "font decrease size" should
be greater.

e.g. how about putting one of the
"foot prints" in the "find" icons actually under the magnifying glass and making a part of the foot print larger.
And for the font icons use a microscope and telescope ?

 Great Icon Set

You really did agreat work! I hope your icon set gets included in KDE3. What I would really like for KDE3 is the possibility to chose from several icon sets. It would be nice to have the possibility to customize your desktop even further and more easily. Is there a module for the kontrollcenter to chose between several icon sets? I don"t really care which icon set is default if you can chose anyway, but I think your beautiful icons are a good candidate for a default icon set!
