Description:

Licq is a multi-threaded multi-protocol chat client written mostly in C++. Supported protocols are AIM/ICQ and MSN. It uses an extensive plugin system to manage many different functions. The main gui is written using the Qt widget set. Licq is distributed under GPL with some special QPL exceptions for Qt.

Development is very ongoing, with new features and bugs fixed frequently. The current version should be very stable.

Changelog:

After more than a year, we have a new Licq release that has many new features! Here is a "short" summary:

* NEW: Web Interface for Licq, control your Licq with a web browser!
* ICQ registration with image verifcation (CAPTCHA Verification)
* DCOP interopability (Send files from Konqueror)
* Show the 5 most recent messages in the chat window (New Option)
* GPG key selection dialog
* Temporary user list (No information saved for certain users, gone on restart )
* Typing notification icon in the main window
* Support not saving passwords (again)
* AIM: Show profiles/away messages properly
* MSN: Email alerts
* MSN: Multi-user group messaging (like a chat)
* MSN: Edit own alias
* MSN: Block list (Invisible List) and Ignore List support
* GPGME: Require v0.4.2 or higher
* Flash taskbar on new messages (New Option)
* Change message display format (New Option)
* Properly send and receive unicode messages
* New emoticons
* Quick emoticon insert button
* Drag'n'drop multiple files to send
* UTF-8 Nicks
* Away message countdown timer
* Fix encoding issues
* Show groups in the correct display order
* GCC4 compatible
* Load, list and unload plugins from the FIFO
* Get file transfers working again

If you just want something fast to chat on icq then licq is the way to go.
Licq is actually what mirabilis icq once looked like (before they began adding all the ads and useless plugins), it's simple and uncluttered.

work with ICQ, which is a major plus when compared to Kopete.

and it starts faster, has easy to read chatlogs and now even supports typing notification (i.e. if the other side is typing). I'm really happy to be back to licq after about one year of absence.

Yeah, Kopete looks nice at the first glance, but program is still "raw", if I may say so.

I used to be a user of Licq for a year and half ago, and today am just forced to get the newest release of Licq (as I try to use as less GTK based apps as possible :) ). Thus Licq has become much versatile since the last time I used it.

you need to compile the msn plugin at first before you can use it. If I remember correct, the tar-File already contains the msn plugin. So you have to download it, unpack it, go into the licq-1.3.0/plugins/msn directory and ./configure && make and "make install" afterwards as root
