Dragon Player is a video player for KDE 4 that focuses on simplicity
and easy of use. It is the successor of Codeine, a player for KDE 3.

It is now available in gutsy-backports, check out the Dragon Player website if you use Kubuntu.

next and back

in DVD I need to use "Next" and "Back" to move between movies. I have matrix 3-in-1 dvd. I can't go to previous and or next movie using codeine. There is no Next and Last buttons and even in the toolbar it's not present.

Can you describe to me what a 3-in-1 DVD is, so I can figure out how to support it? I've not heard of these before and don't really know what they are, is it DVD video still?

a 3-in-1 dvd is a DVD which has Three movies. Like my matrix 3-in-1 has:

1. The Matrix
2. Matrix reloaded
3. Matrix Revolutions

Likwise there are other 3 in 1 dvds for other movies like:

1. Jurassic part 1,2,3
2. kill bill
etc.

I can access the 3-in-1 movies from the dvd using menu toggle feature.

But it is very confusing to use Menu Toggle. As codeine design goal is simplicity and intelligent behavior, which I appreciate very much.

I can access the 3 movies in the DVD by using 'Menu Toggle' but a Next and 'Back' buttons will definitely make it easier. thanks.

Yeah next chapter back chapter buttons are needed, definately. DVD support aint great yet. They play, but aren't handled well by the GUI. That'll be a priority for 1.1 I've already decided. Hope that's good enough, thanks :-)

Codeine is now my primary player, but there's a few minor things that would make it perfect.
Being able to skip forward and backward like 10 seconds. I see there is already something bound to the left and right arrow keys that should do that, but it doesn't work (skips to the beginning). I suspect this is a xine-lib bug since amaroK has a similar issue.
The cursor should disappear when unmoving for a few seconds over playing video. I imagine this somehow possible.
*The 'fullscreen' option on the movie context menu is bound to u instead of f. :)

1. Yeah skipping forward and backwards is not great. I want to improve this, but xine-lib is not great at scanning through media for most formats. But I do intend to try to improve things, I have some ideas. 2.As far as I can tell, it does disappear after 4 seconds of not moving. This has always been coded in. Maybe I've missed a bug, can you provide a test-case for this not working? 3. This is unfortunately the KDE standard. U is the key in English translations for the menu shortcut for full screen mode. I don't really want to go against the KDE way for things like this as people who learn the shortcuts will find Codeine annoyingly different. F still works when the menu isn't up, as that is the general keyboard accelerator for fullscreen mode.

Do you have plans to add support for subtitles? And what about adding the possibility to hide and pause codeine with one action like kaffeine offers it with a click on the tray icon?
i like the idea of a simple movie player and the session idea for every movie file is great. I tried codeine in an earlier version where it didn't work, now it seems to work fine. I am using it now as the behaviour of kaffeine to play the previously played file at the end of the currently played file (hope you get what I mean) is driving me nuts and kplayer jumps around happily when maximized and minimized between my 2 monitors in my xinerama setup, but a pause and hide function would make codeine even more attractive to me. ; )

kaffeine has such a feature via its system tray icon. When I do a simple left mouse click over the tray icon while the kaffeine window is visible it hides completely (an entry in any taskbar is also removed), if it was also playing it pauses the playback too. Another click brings the video back and restarts the playback again. I find this very convenient, especilly if also bound to a keyboard shortcut: the player window is minimized and the playback paused in one action and the playback retstarted just as simple.
I hope I was clear enough, if not just ask again, maybe I will also have some more suggestions.

Mxcl, since you're also a core amaroK dev, please take inspiration from the revamped amarok 1.3 xine config page.
Yeah, I know that a video app needs much more option than an audio one, but showing every xine setting is far too distant from the KISS philosophy you have in mind with Codeine.
I mean, you don't even have a stop button on the standard toolbar and you got 6 pages full of widgets in the config window?

Thanks for the comment, but I don't see a reason to remove it. Inconsistency with the otherwise KISS philosophy doesn't bother me as the application is very simple, except for this dialog, something you only see if you request it. What I mean is, the complicated dialog is not visible during any normal usage. Full xine-configuration was requested by a number of users, and because of the way xine is, it only requires 30 lines of code to generate the dialog, so it's not bloating the app. The reason I provide it is that without full configuration there is no convenient way to fix a broken xine. As it says in the dialog, there is no reason to even use the dialog unless xine isn't working properly.

Well, IMO some voodoo-options should go only in the configuration file, it's clear text, if you want to change for example the codecs path, edit it manually. Chances are that with you distro packager doing a good job there won't ever be a need to change the default provided. And this could be applied to lots of other option. Anyway, it's your app, if you're ok with this it's not a problem at all :)

Yeah I do agree, but the problem is xine doesn't make it possible to distinguish between a sane option and an option that only God would want to change. So it's kinda hard to fix. But yes I see your point and have been thinking about what I could do about it. Thanks for the comments! :)
