Description:

Kvantum is an SVG-based theme engine for Qt4/Qt5 and KDE, i.e. a program for styling Qt applications with SVG images, with an emphasis on elegance, usability and practicality.

Kvantum comes with a default dark theme, inspired by the default theme of Enlightenment. Creation of realistic themes like that for KDE was my first reason to make Kvantum but it allows themes with very different looks and feels, whether they be photorealistic or cartoonish, 3D or flat, embellished or minimalistic, or something in between.

Kvantum also has extra themes, that are installed as root with Qt5 installation and can be selected and activated by using Kvantum Manager.

The core idea of Kvantum, namely using of SVG images for drawing Qt widgets, is taken from QuantumStyle (not developed anymore but continued as QSvgStyle at https://github.com/DexterMagnific/QSvgStyle).

*** Compilation and Installation ***

Please read the file INSTALL for detailed instructions on compilation and installation for Qt4 and Qt5!

For 64-bit Debian Testing (and, perhaps, other 64-bit Debian-based systems too), you could just use the deb package(s) at https://github.com/tsujan/Kvantum/releases. There is also a link to 32 and 64-bit Arch packages, kindly made by Josip (metak), in the Files section of this page.

*** Theme Making ***

For instructions on how to change configuration or make new themes, please read the files Theme-Config and Theme-Making in the doc folder!

*** Notes ***

(1) Each new theme should be accompanied by a KDE color scheme because some KDE apps may use colors specific to KDE. Qt apps use Kvantum colors though.

(2) Kvantum does not provide window decorations. Such jobs are done by the window manager.

(3) For the latest and other releases, please go to the home page! This page may not be up-to-date.

Changelog:

See ChangeLog inside the source for a thorough list.

This Theme Engine is a very good job, personally i think the default Qvantum theme is the best dark one i found for kde.
I'd like also the decoration theme used in the first screenshot, is it aurorae? where can i find it?
Thank's

Thanks a lot! Yes, the decoration is Aurorae. I couldn't include it because, as you know, Kvantum is a theme engine.

My other Kvantum themes, namely KvDark and KvGray, include Aurorae decorations. You could find them at kde-look.org. I'll update them soon.

I'll try to make one if it isn't hard in a 64-bit system.

 Opera 12

Some apps like for example Opera 12 and some others i have tried has problems with white fonts in the white address bar making the text unreadable. Is this fixable somehow? I love the style but that is nothing short of a showstopper right there.

Yes, some apps don't respect dark themes. However, Kvantum will do its best to correct their behavior if "Respect dark themes" is checked in Kvantum Manager (checked by default).

As Opera isn't open-source, I can't find the source of its problem but if its addressbar bg is white, it surely uses an internal style incompatible with dark themes.

I would be grateful if you give me some open-source examples so that I could improve Kvantum's workaround code for such apps. Maybe the new code will work for Opera too.

Thank you! It isn't well-known yet and I hope more themes will be made fo it. Although I made 5, I have to focus on the engine itself.

For now, I prefer to keep Kvantum independent of KDE (although tuned to it) and a menubar may not be possible without KDE dependency. But I add it to my TODO list.

Enable Kvantum theme in Plasma 5

 by D-- on: Feb 8 2015

How should I enable Kvantum from plasma 5 (5.2)? In systemsettings -> application style -> widgets style there is no Kvantum.

Am I doing something wrong or Kvantum is not (yet) integrated with systemsetting from Plasma 5?

Many thanks for your work :)

If you use the deb or arch packages or have compiled Kvantum yourself as explained in INSTALL, its Qt5 plugin will work with Qt5 apps. To test that, run a Qt5 app with this command:

YOUR_APP -style kvantum

If that works, please tell me which distro you use so that I could install it on VirtualBox and see what's the problem because I don't have Plasma5 yet. But if the above command doesn't work, you don't have Kvantum's Qt5 plugin.

Nevermind, solved. I'm using ArchLinux packages. I had installed kvantum-tools-qt4-svn instead of kvantum-tools-qt5-svn.

As soon as I installed the right tools package Kvantum appeared into Plasma 5 systemsettings.

Thank you.

Good to know that :) Plasma4 had some issues, for which I added workarounds in the code. Plasma5 may still have its own problems. If so, please be patient until a stable version of it comes (to Debian) so that I could fix them. However, Qt5 apps shouldn't have any issue.
BTW, it's better to install both Qt4 and Qt5 plugins. Their names are kvantum-qt4-git and kvantum-qt5-gi in metak's Arch packages.

Yes, I have them both and everything works fine. Now I just wish I had more time to make my own theme :)
