Description:

Elegance Colors is a highly customizable chameleon theme for Gnome Shell. It can change colors according to the current GTK theme, current wallpaper (uses imagemagick to get color) or use a user defined color.

Currently Elegance Colors supports Gnome Shell 3.6, 3.8 and 3.10.

---

Installation Instructions:

Ubuntu users can install Elegance Colors from our themes PPA using the following commands,

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:satyajit-happy/themes
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-theme-elegance-colors

If you use another distro, you need to compile from source. This is needed for the GUI.

Don't worry, it is easy and straight forward.

You need to install the build-dependencies first (package names may vary depending on your distro),

glib2-devel gtk3-devel vala

Extract the archive, navigate to the directory and type the following commands in a terminal,

make
sudo make install

To derive color from wallpaper, you need to install ImageMagick.

Also install the User Theme Extension for Gnome Shell (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/19/user-themes/)

A process runs in background which detects changes, generates the theme and reloads the theme accordingly. After installation, you must run the following command to start the background process,

elegance-colors

To set the theme, run the following commands,

gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.user-theme name 'elegance-colors'

You can launch the GUI from the menu which lets you customise various aspects of the the theme. You can also export your customized theme, import/export settings from the GMenu. Click on the title in the Gnome Shell top bar to get the GMenu.

---

Troubleshooting:

It is recommended to stop any previous instances of elegance-colors when updating to a new version. You can kill running processes of elegance-colors with the command,

killall elegance-colors

To view any error messages produced, run the process in Terminal,

elegance-colors start

To manually apply changes, run,

elegance-colors apply

If your theme fails to apply after an upgrade, it is likely that the config file doesn't include new options. To update the config file, run,

elegance-colors update

To export the theme, run,

elegance-colors export /path/to/themefile.zip

Credits: Thanks to Alin Andrei (http://www.webupd8.org) and Brian Bentsen (http://bimsebasse.deviantart.com) for their valuable suggestions and testing.

Changelog:

* Gnome Shell 3.10 support
* Removed option to customize app icon sizes in overview
* Fixed a bug where it failed to make theme when wallpaper is XML
* Better error handling
* Various minor tweaks

 Great theme

This theme is best yet, gnome should consider adding something like this, as for once it gives gnome-shell an element of customizability, from an easy to use menu. Great work, this is more than a theme, it is the essential part missing from gnome shell !.

 Boring

It almost looks like the standard theme for gnome-shell.

Given the amount of customization, you can change the entire look of the theme. You can choose from 5 presets. Also the theme is chameleonic (unity like chameleonic features will soon be added). Give it another try and you won't be disappointed.

I did give it a try and after your answer I realized that there is an app for customizing it. Thanks. Customized it is really nice. I am actually using it. :) I would change my vote if this was possible.

One thing that I miss (or is it a bug?) is that when I tap the upper left corner (tab "overview" in config app? seems to change nothing...) - the color of panel etc. and background image change to dark grey and uni black wallpaper. Does not look good when using a bright wallpaper and bright gtk theme. Also I miss transparency in left and lower panel. Would be nice if you could change this (without transparency it reminds me of Windumb 8 look. ;)

Well, you can change the background colors and opacity through the GUI. I couldn't understand your problem. May be a screenshot?

Hmmm... Something seems to be wrong. It shouldn't happen. Does it happen with other themes?

I googled a bit, because with other themes there is the same problem: it is a cairo bug. :(

Thanks for your help and this nice theme. :)

I forgot: Problems occur when using preset "Clear" which should fit bright themes I think. Would be nice if you could fix this. Using Gnome 3.6.0 from PPA (Ubuntu 12.10).

 Best Gnome Shell theme in history! :)

 by gutigen on: Feb 3 2013

However "border-bottom-width" could be 0px by default, otherwise it creates very odd visual effect - that border line above maximized window doesn't always look like a straight line, depends on background ofc.

You can adjust the opacity of the border instead. Removing the border entirely will lessen 1 element to customize :D

For including custom CSS, look under "Advanced configuration" in the README.md - https://github.com/satya164/elegance-colors/blob/master/README.md
