Think about a secretary who comes to work after IT has just convencied management to save a bundle of money by switching to Linux. Is she going to know her way around KDE?? No but if it looks like XP, the enviroment she has been using and is "used" to using then you dont have to train her how to keep typing those word docs she just goes straight to work and and doesnt think twice about it. Score one more for Linux.

Did people train her to use Windows XP, or Windows? You see, what people like you do not understand, is that it doesn't give a damn what it looks like. What's important is how it works. You can make KDE look like XP, but it will not work like XP. The dumb girl you just talked about will not be able to work with KDE just because it looks like XP. That will probably just add more to the confusion.

Avoid using phrases like "what people like you". You'll put people on the defensive.

Working like XP would be counter-productive. ;)

Changing the appearance of something unfamiliar to the familiar would probably lead to more confusion? Anyone here can think of numerous examples supporting the opposite. If I had a car with a fuel cell engine that accomplishes what my previous cars had done (i.e. transport me places), would I want it to look different or resemble what I was used to? Would I already want to be familiar with what it looked like?

An experiment could always be done. Sit down a novice user in front of a stock enlightenment desktop and ask them to get their normal computing needs done. Now try the same with something that looks familiar to them...

No I don't agree with you .... my wife is of the above "secretary" type. She was apprehensive of using my fully configured (email, multimedia, office utilities) yoper linux desktop until .... until I used the Win 2000 look for her user login -- mine's got the MacOS X look ;-)

Now, she does not care, and anyway she likes firefox under windows, so for most operations she does not know the difference in appearance or working.

I think giving users a familiar look-and-feel is not an insult to linux ... in fact its a compliment ... for instance, how easy is it to mimic the linux look and feel on windows???

This is really quite scary... I'm not a big fan of the teletubbie land interface of Windows XP, but I know that they spent a whole lot of money on making it Just Right, so I guess they thought about it a lot ;) Anyway, what scares me is that it does indeed seem like the real thing, at least at first, and even second inspection. Congrats :) Points for technical skill there ;)
