Description:

RKWard aims to provide an easily extensible, easy to use IDE/GUI for the R-project. RKWard strives to combine the power of the R-language with the (relative) ease of use of commercial statistical packages. While RKWard is far from finished, it is already useful to R experts looking for an IDE interface to the R language. For R novices, it provides graphical dialogs for a limited but growing number of statistical and graphing features.

Changelog:

--- Version 0.6.2 - Oct-20-2014
- In data editor, indicate NAs, explicitly
- Import Stata plugin gains option to convert character encoding.
- New plugin for recoding categorical data
- New embeddable (minimal) plugin "multi_input" to combine different input elements
- Fixed: Problems starting from paths with spaces in the file name on Windows
- Added command line option --r-executable for switching between several installations of R
- Use a binary wrapper, instead of wrapper shell script for startup on all platforms
- Linear regression plugin gains option to save predicted values
- Fixed some compilation problems
- Add basic support to export plots using tikzDevice
- Fixed: cbind-value of element was missing commas
- Fixed: Give a label to an unlabelled toolbar
- Fixed: Adjust to (re-?)named parameters for options("pager")
- Allow plugin UI script code to query R for information
- Fixed: potential crash when a previously installed pluginmap is not longer readable
- Allow to connect / source to any property, not just
- New plugin elements and
- New plugin element for selecting arbitrary string values (otherwise almost identical to )
- can be set to accept the same object several times. Used in scatterplot plugin.
- New R function rk.embed.device() for manually embedding graphics devices in RKWard
- Fixed: R backend would exit immediately, without meaningful error message, if there is an error in .Rprofile (or Rprofile.site)
- Fixed: Installing suggested packages from the package installation dialog was broken
- Fixed: Selecting a mirror via the "R packages" settings page would not work when prompted for package installation form the backend
- Remove support for compiling RKWard in a single process (threaded) variant. This was not used / tested since RKWard 0.5.5
- Shortcuts for the "Run ..." actions have been changed for better cross-platform compatibility
- The script editor's "Run line" and "Run selection" actions have been merged
- Add UI for configuring default graphics device, and embedding of standard graphics devices.
- New RKWard native on-screen device (RK()). This is the default on-screen device in RKWard, now.
- New R function rk.without.plot.history() for turning off plot history, temporarily
- Add command line option --backend-debugger

this is way cool! at our university they are using SPSS (statistical analyse tool for the social sciences, I study psychology) and I whould love to get rid of that piece of software, and be able to run statistical tools under a nice, easy to use KDE integrated environment ;-)

I love u guys please keep on goin', when finnished this will rock I'm sure!

In fact, this matches close to exactly what my motivation was for starting the project. Glad you like it.
Of course it will still take quite some time before rkward will truely "rock". If you like, check http://rkward.sourceforge.net/devel/start.php to find out, how you can help.

configure command:
./configure --prefix=/usr/kde/3.3/ --with-extra-libs=/usr/lib/R/lib/ --with-extra-includes=/usr/lib/R/include

seems like the f2c on gentoo (libf2c version 20021004-r1) is not uptodate?

the relevant part should be:

Indrek, starting to use R for statistical analysis in economics.

The problem with "cannot find -lR" is certainly one of the most frequent causes of compilation failure for rkward. It seems some distributions do not ship R with a shared library, but only linked statically, so you may need to get the source package from http://www.r-project.org/ and build manually.
You will want to try location "libR.so" on your system and pass that path to configure (--with-extra-libs=/path/to/libR.so/).
Also see http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1240733&forum_id=165574 for a discussion about this problem.

Reporting compilation success with gentoo (system up to date, on profile 2005.0).
Ofcourse, I used the 2.1.0 R ebuild (edit your package.keywords to unmask it from ~x86).
At least for that version of R (I did not check the older versions), the econf function (that controls the ./configure script in the ebuild) contains the option for the shared library.
On another note, for rkward to do anything useful you will need php (since it generates output as html using php as an engine).

As even the author will tell you, rkward is far from a finished project so even if you do manage to compile it, it will be more of a "teaser" for what can eventually become the friendliest serious statistics package on unix machines. For the time being, for real production, you'll have to stick to the actual R console or try some other R-GUI. I managed to enable the JGR with some major hocus-pocus involving unmasking (hard mask) sun-jdk-1.5 and creating a startup script to control java-config so that this jvm is to be run only for JGR and NOT the rest of the system.
But apart from all other problems and troubles, I never really liked java apps. A kde-based app showing such potential as rkward does has all my wishes and prayers! ;-)

Sorry for the long delay. I have not checked this page for quite some time.
The problem you report has been fixed in the current CVS version. Visit http://sourceforge.net/projects/rkward for instructions on retrieving the current CVS-code. Also, a new release is expected soon.

Following iseppo and peco I altered the configure command to this, for SUSE 9.1:

rod#./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3/include/ --with-extra-libs=/usr/local/lib/R/lib/ --with-extra-includes=/usr/local/lib/R/include

and it configured successfully but 'make' comes to a stop with:

Sorry, it took me so long to reply, again.
I thought this problem had been corrected in 0.3.1, but apparently it has snuck back in. Anyway, you can easily fix this in your copy simply by changing line 78 in rkward/plugin/rkplugin.cpp

from
QString dummy = QFileInfo (QFile (filename)).dirPath () + "/code.php";

to
QString dummy = QFileInfo (filename).dirPath () + "/code.php";

i.e. removing the QFile ().
