Description:

VLSub is not working with Vlc 2.1.x, please update to 2.2.

Search and download subtitles from opensubtitles.org using the hash of the video currently playing or its title.
INSTALLATION:
- click on the download button below
- save the archive and extract the file "vlsub.lua"
- create a directory "extensions" at this location and put the file "vlsub.lua" inside:
* Windows (all users): %ProgramFiles%\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\
* Windows (current user): %APPDATA%\vlc\lua\extensions\
* Linux (all users): /usr/lib/vlc/lua/extensions/
* Linux (current user): ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions/
* Mac OS X (all users): /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/share/lua/extensions/
* Mac OS X (current user): /Users/%your_name%/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc/lua/extensions/

...or use the installer below if you're on Windows 7 (32 or 64)

To start the extension click on View > VLSub or Vlc > Extensions > VLSub on Mac OS.

/!\ Troubleshooting /!\

If you have other issue you can ask for a solution here or on github but please get the full vlc debug log and add it as a pastebin to your post. The procedure is explained here:

 VLSub on VLC 2.1.0 64-bit

 by rodrigop2p on: Sep 27 2013

Score 50%

Windows 8 Single Language 64-bit
VLSub.luac 0.9.10 provided from vlc original package.

I did as recommended and saved the log file and posted on pastebin as well. Here it is:
http://pastebin.com/JW91s0rH

For what I read on it, VLSub is apparently having difficulty making a valid path to save settings and the main issue would be some parameter within the function activate. I don't really know Lua, but I hope it helped. :)

 Installer bug, 64bit Win 7, 32bit VLC, custom path

 by MartinPC on: Sep 27 2013

Score 50%

I'm running 32-bit VLC on 64-bit Windows 7. VLC's program files are accordingly located in the \Program Files (x86)\ folder, which is for 32-bit programs, rather than the \Program Files\ folder, which is for 64-bit programs. Moreover, I did a custom install, installing VLC to \Program Files (x86)\VLC Media Player\ rather than to the default \Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\. (I like less nested, more obvious install paths for easier navigation.)

The Windows 7 installer for VLSub, however, created the path \Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\ and installed vlsub.lua there. Here's the VLSub install report:

=========================================

VLSub Installation
------------------

Install VLSub for all users or current user only (a/c)?a
Installing VLSub for all user
The system cannot find the path specified.
Creating directory '"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions"'
A subdirectory or file C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions already exists.
vlsub.lua location: '"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions"\vlsub.lua'

Installation successfully completed.
'else' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Installation failed.
Press any key to continue . . .

=========================================

I'm guessing that the installer didn't take into account the possibility that VLC had been installed to a custom path. I'm not a programmer or Windows expert, but I'm pretty sure custom install locations are retrievable from the registry, e.g., from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\vlc.exe\shell\Open\command.

Ideally, in 64-bit Windows systems, the installer would check for both 64-bit and 32-bit VLC installs, whether in custom or default paths, and install vlsub.lua for whatever version(s) it finds. Since many of us are still running 32-bit browsers due to the dearth of 64-bit plugins, I'm guessing some people may be running either the 32-bit version alone or *both* the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of VLC (if that's possible), if only for the 32-bit version's browser plugins. (I didn't learn that VideoLAN even *made* a 64-bit version of VLC media player until a few minutes ago, so I haven't tried it.)

I had no problem installing vlsub.lua to the correct place manually; I was just confused about what to do with the locale folder. (I stuck it alongside the vlsub.lua file in the extensions folder just in case it's needed.) I haven't had a chance to try out the extension with a video yet, but it's showing up at the bottom of VLC's View menu and its interface seems to open correctly.

Thanks for what looks to be a very cool extension. I hope this feedback is useful. All the best.

Hey, thanks for this great extension.
It was working perfectly until I upgraded to 2.1.0 (windows 8 32 bits).

I reinstalled it. When I click on "view=>Vlsub", nothing happens.

Yes, VLSub won't work in Vlc 2.1.0 on any platform because the lua "net" module has been removed in this release for the extensions. I open a ticket to ask the videolan team to re-enabled it.
I'll keep you posted.

Regards,

Yes, jb re enabled the net module but it's no good because a function of this module was also desactivated, this time for windows only. I saw on github they're working on it but I don't know if it will be fix on the next release.
A guy told me it works with vlc 2.2 nightly build, you can get this version from here:

 VLC not responding problem

 by shandissanayake on: Oct 12 2013

Score 50%

hi,
I really love this extension and I've been using this about a year now.
I'm on a 32 bit windows 7 computer
Recently VLC media player started to "not respond" while using vlsub.
Sometimes it happens during download, during searching, during hashing and after downloading.
When vlc started to "not respond" same thing happens for the whole computer, I cant do anything when this happens. "Alt+Ctrl+Del" also doesn't work.
I tried and this happened in another computer too.
I have a full debug report in here http://pastebin.com/TXXRzWeL
Can you please fix this? i really love this program but i cannot use it anymore because of this error. Thank you.

 Doesn't work with mac

I tried to install this on my mac (OS 10.7.5) with VLC version 1.0.1 . The problem is that the option for VLCsub doesn't show up at all under VLC. It's like it isn't installed at all. I checked the name of the extensions folder and I've checked everything several times, and restarted several times, but it still doesn't work :/ Any ideas?
