Description:

VLSub is not working with Vlc 2.1.x, please update to 2.2.

Search and download subtitles from opensubtitles.org using the hash of the video currently playing or its title.
INSTALLATION:
- click on the download button below
- save the archive and extract the file "vlsub.lua"
- create a directory "extensions" at this location and put the file "vlsub.lua" inside:
* Windows (all users): %ProgramFiles%\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\
* Windows (current user): %APPDATA%\vlc\lua\extensions\
* Linux (all users): /usr/lib/vlc/lua/extensions/
* Linux (current user): ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions/
* Mac OS X (all users): /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/share/lua/extensions/
* Mac OS X (current user): /Users/%your_name%/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc/lua/extensions/

...or use the installer below if you're on Windows 7 (32 or 64)

To start the extension click on View > VLSub or Vlc > Extensions > VLSub on Mac OS.

/!\ Troubleshooting /!\

If you have other issue you can ask for a solution here or on github but please get the full vlc debug log and add it as a pastebin to your post. The procedure is explained here:
https://github.com/exebetche/vlsub/wiki/Troubleshooting

Changelog:

2014-09-12
Fix error with http 301 redirection

2014-08-19
Fix subtitles loading on Vlc 2.2

2014-05-08
Fix a bug due to opensubtitles header modifications

 Swedish translation

Hi,

Thought you might want a Swedish translation for this addon. I have one ready to go, so where can I send it?

Hi

Yes that would be great. If you're familiar with github you can create a "pull request" on the project page but any file hosting would do like a pastebin for example.

Thank you

The translation should be UTF-8 encoded. You do not need any special text editor/convertor (Notepad++ is my favorite one). Just File > Save as... > Encoding: [UTF-8] in Notepad in Windows.

 Network problem

 by crisorlandobr on: Jul 26 2013

Score 50%

Hi
This version is way better than the old ones, but I am having a problem
I keep my TV shows and movies at another computer external drive, and I am not able to save the subtitles to networked folder
I can watch with the subs, no problem, but it only saves to the local vlsub folder
C:\Users\my user \AppData\Roaming\vlc\lua\extensions\userdata\vlsub

And the subtitle is never saved to the other drive in the network

This machine (player) is windows 8 x 64 and the other (where the files are) is windows 8.1 x64, and both login with the same live.com username
and I can manually delete or copy and paste files to the other machine, but with the vlsub, no way
I even changed vlc.exe to admin rights and still no luck with this stuff

What I gotta do to save it to the network ?
Tks

The extension use the standard function "fopen" through lua to write in files, if windows doesn't provide a pipeline to the network with this function I think there's not much to do.
But you can always configure "Manual download" in the config and save the file manually.

But send me your log anyway, maybe there is a problem with the way the path to the folder is handled. See:

The log is here

It looks its not even trying to save to the network drive, since it only shows the path to the local temp folder

My network path is this:
\\C-new81a\f\_HDc\_0TEMP\Ghost Whisperer All Seasons 1 - 5 _ Pillz\Ghost Whisperer - Season 4

Ok thanks. You need just need to connect this network folder as a drive and then start your video from this mounted drive, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308582

I don't think it's possible to save something in a network folder if it's not mounted but i'll check.

Hi

Still no luck
Mounted the network path as a drive letter and keeps the same behavior
VLC shows the subtitle but still does not save to the right place, and VLC temp folder still shows the sub files there, but still not saving to the network location

You need to connect this network folder as a drive and then start your video from this mounted drive, so giving you mounted the folder //C-new81a/F on the drive Z: you do
vlc.exe Z:\_HDc\_0TEMP\dod_whisperer.avi

Can you open anything else, like a text file, using the file browser? Create a new file inside?

I tested it yesterday on XP with a folder shared with samba, it worked...

Hi

I solved the problem with the network mapped letter

The culprit was VLC itself, since I was using VLC x86 and it was not working, I decided to install VLC x64 and the x64 branch worked 100% fine, so that must be something wrong with the x86 at some network login part.

And I was able to create and delete files with no problem there, but now its solved and I asked at VLC forum about that too and warned about the bug with the x86 version

tks :)

It's C:/ProgramFiles/VideoLAN/vlc/lua/extensions and you have to create the folder. Double check.

It is safe to use quotes on paths as they can contain spaces:
"%ProgramFiles%\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --verbose=2 --file-logging --logfile="%HOMEPATH%\vlc_log.txt"

So i put some quote : "C:\Program Files\VideoLan\vlc\vlc.exe --verbose=2" and i got the same message !

Nope, still absolutely no error message, 2 possibilities:
- or you don't get the error log right from the beginning and doing so you skip the error message. That's probably the case because on my Vlc, the log always start with the version name and number, revision. So I updated the troubleshooting section with a new method that allow you to get the full log easily
- OR the file is not in the right folder

Oookay, here your error:
lua warning: Error loading script C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\vlsub.lua: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\vlsub.lua:4: unexpected symbol near '<'
What happened, is that you saved the html page from github, not the actual file. On github if you want to access the real file, not the web page, you have to click on the button "raw".
You can also use the link "download zip" on github or any of the 2 links on this page.

 How do I update VLSub?

How do I update VLSub? Does it download latest updates automatically?

Also, I haven't find a proper way to check the VLSub's version number. The extension itself displays version number of "0.9" though it is actually at least version "0.96".

No, it doesn't update itself, I'm gonna add this feature. For now you update it the same way you install it, by putting the file in the right folder.
And no, I didn't put the minor version anywhere so I guess you have no way to way to check it beside comparing it will the version on github, I'll also add this on next updates.
Thanks for this remarks.

I figured it out...the windows installer was not installing it in my program file (x86) folder.....manually got the lua file and put it in the correct path...and voila...the sucker is showing up now.

(just though I'd post this as it might help someone else too)

The "net" module doesn't seem to be present in this version of Vlc, probably because it's a pre release. Try a stable version or contact the vlc team to ask about it, but there's nothing I can do for you.
