FYI, the official kde applet Shelf already provides this functionality. A 2010 screencast:

The name is probably localised (at least it is in German, here it's called Regal), so you should look out for mensola.

I have been unable to find the "Shelf" plasmoid for Kubuntu with KDE 4.7.3 (and didn't know it even existed).
So... I developed my own, simpler plasmoid. -1 for Shelf :)

Don't mind about shelf, their 'places' is not customizable and icons aren't resizable (too big). I claimed about it to the author but he didn't give any answer.

Bug when placed in a bottom or side bar.

Hi,

Nice plasmoid, but it is designed to be placed in a top bar. If I put it in a bottom bar or a side bar, it starts to behave strangely.

Some part of the plasmoid is outside of the screen, which makes it useless, and less critical but annoying, the sliding animation when opening it is always up to down.

 Looks good, but...

If I try this in Chakra Linux, I get a beautiful menu, with black text over a black background...

Can that be fixed?
