Description:

I would like to put an editable text label on my folder icons and have it display not unlike folder content previews. Text and label shape would need to scale with size. This allows me to, in Dolphin and in Folder view, identify at a glance any folder I choose to label this way: I wouldn't have to create a custom emblem for every folder. I know that this would not be as functional with very small folder icons, but neither is the content preview. (Zoom screenshot for proper resolution)

Yes, I do, but the at-a-glance recognition that an icon provides is what I'd prefer. Maybe I'm just weird but reading the label under is not as instantaneously discernible to me.
Also, panel and other plasmoids which forego labeling the icon could take advantage of this
My second thought was to not show icon labels under if this were implemented, but I think I might keep both as I had first thought.
Maybe I am way off, but I think before I'd even read the label my eye would see the icon, label and all, and before I even read the label I'd recognize the shape of the word and shape of the first letter and be able to tell which it is. A picture vs. word/ right brain vs. left brain thing. The same shape thing does not happen with the labels.
I am beginning to realize this could sound lazy; but I recognize and click on application icons and almost never read the labels under.

The KDE has an option to set the direcrory icon through the '.directory' file.

You could write a service menu /1/ to set the directory icons with the labels or emblems /2/.

There is available the 'Folder emblems' /3/ service menu:
"This is a hack to:
* add sort of an "emblem" feature to the folders in KDE4.
* simulate the "folder.jpg" functionnality of Windows XP (i.e. assign as icon to
the directory an image present within itself).."

There are also: 'Folder Icon' /4/ and 'Color Folder' service menus.

"Downloads", was a bad example of a label. "UW Project" is more like I was thinking.
I was also thinking that I'd like to type in a label like 2 clicks from the context menu, so it's really easy.
Basically it is a really simple, (to use), custom emblem. I just wanted to be able to type and have a recognizable emblem for any folder I'd like. There is already a great icon and emblem for "Downloads".

I don't think that it is a good idea to support yet another labeling mechanizm.

But a preview like this could look good if used to display some Nepomuk data.
