Description:

Aldabra is a GTK2 theme that uses the Murrine and Pixmap engines to mimic the look of Adwaita, the default GNOME 3 theme.

The goal of this theme is to provide visual consistency between GTK2 and GTK3 applications. It is a work in progress, and there are several known issues: keyboard shortcut color in menus, gray menu gradient, and toolbar button hover glow.

Versions currently exist for GNOME 3.0 and GNOME 3.2. Please download the version of Aldabra that matches your version of GNOME.

Aldabra is available under the LGPLv2+. Anyone is welcome to rename, package, or otherwise distribute the theme (in whole or in part) as permitted by that license. Constructive feedback is greatly appreciated.

Updated Metacity and GTK themes to fit GNOME 3.2. Metacity and GTK3 theme are taken from Adwaita. Modified notebook tab to clean up Firefox. Made menus and tooltips borderless and sized correctly. 2011-06-18 Version 0.7.5 Added a COPYING and NEWS file to the archive to help packagers. The theme itself has not changed.

2011-06-15 Version 0.7.5. Fixed Eclipse scrollbars. Thanks goes to mxt on ubuntuforums.

2011-06-06 Version 0.7.4. Corrected the colors of radios and checks in menus. Fixed the scrollbar "invalid borders" error.

2011-06-02 Version 0.7.3. Switched archive formats again. Attempted to allow installation via dragging archive to gnome-appearance-properties and to reduce errors in GNOME 2.

2011-06-02 Version 0.7.2. Modified index.theme. Aldabra displays as a full theme in gnome-appearance-properties without errors/warnings about missing dependencies.

2011-06-02 Version 0.7.1. Modified index.theme.

2011-06-02 Version 0.7. Modified index.theme. Removed the active tab underline and replaced screengrab checkboxes/radiobuttons with the official Adwaita images. Switched back to .zip because of GNOME-look's upload filesize limit.

2011-06-01 Version 0.6.2. Fixed gVim scrollbars.

2011-06-01 Version 0.6.1. Modified the toolbar pixmap to work better with some applications. Added radiobuttons and checkboxes to Firefox.

2011-05-31 Version 0.6. Added Adwaita-styled checkboxes and radiobuttons. They are not applied perfectly yet. Please comment about any regressions.

2011-05-31 Version 0.5.2. Fixed Firefox menubar selected text color.

2011-05-31 Version 0.5.1. Uploaded a .tar, because .tar.gz would not open. Fixed expanders.

2011-05-31 Uploaded a .tar.gz to help packagers. Contents of file have not changed, just the archive format.

2011-05-31 Initial commit to GNOME-look.org.

This is exactly what I was looking for.
Works almost perfect with libreoffice *thumbsup*
However I appreciate it that in future gnome 3 version apps like firefox (espacially tabs in the titlebar) or libreoffice would better integrate with the look of the whole desktop.
Anyway: Thank you for sharing your theme

You're welcome, I'm glad you appreciate it! I fixed Firefox menubar text in the latest version. I will look at tabs, but I'm not sure what I can do yet. Thank you for the feedback.

Ok, I worked on Firefox tabs a bit. For a more native look, unselect "Tabs on Top" in Firefox. Then, create a userChrome.css file in $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/[profile].default/chrome. Paste this (http://pastebin.com/HEqfuyCi) into the userChrome.css file and restart Firefox.

The active tab is overlapped on the right, I'm still working on that.

A new version of the Firefox userChrome.css is available here (http://pastebin.com/znJTpuHm). I added the Adwaita toolbar background but still haven't figured out how to fix the overlapping tabs.

add this to .tabbrowser-tab[selected=true]:

z-index: 1 !important;
position: relative !important;

Then create this selector:

.tabbrowser-tab[selected=false] {
z-index: 0 !important;
position: relative !important;
}

As for Aldabra, it’s amazing! I hope it makes it to upstream soon!

Nice work! Is there a way to specify #nav-bar for different tab positions (ie. tabs on top, tabs on bottom)? I made a userChrome.css based on yours designed for tabs on bottom (http://pastebin.com/CvPXTQNF), but I'd like to have one file that can do both, if possible. Thanks for great work!

I've also fixed a slight tab label shifting when the throbber appears.

Unfortunately I have no idea as to how to consolidate both styles in a single .css file. There are also two other issues I couldn't fix:

  • Try creating enough new tabs to overflow the tab bar, then pin a couple of them.

  • There's no border between the unselected tabs and whatever is immediately below them (either the nav bar or the content area).

    • If you can make it more beautiful, please do.

    It's really nice! Tab backgrounds are plain in other applications, so I'm not sure if the toolbar background should be used there. I like the gradient in #nav-bar, though.

    I also noticed the two issues you mentioned, but I'm haven't found a fix yet. Adding a border-bottom to #TabsToolbar will draw a line under all tabs, but this is suboptimal, since the active tab should not be underlined.

    I took several screenshots and compared Firefox and Epiphany to align the various elements. Firefox is nearly pixel-pefect now. Do you know a way to make the border around #urlbar and .searchbar-textbox darker to match GtkEntry borders? Also, is there a way to disable access keys/mnemonic keys?

    Looks good, you should make the new tab "+" button more unlike a button when hovering over it. The Adwaita tab buttons on say gedit3 don't act that way. Just the "x" icon lightens up a bit when hovering.

    @inckie Thanks for the excellent work! Firefox looks great now. I am using Cantarell Regular 10 with a 0.9 Text Scaling Factor and have no alignment problems with your latest version.

    @leecon Button highlights are wrong in all of Aldabra, not just Firefox. Once buttons are fixed in gtkrc, Firefox buttons _should_ display correctly without modifications to userChrome.css.

    The newest version (0.6.2) includes a fix for the gvim scrollbar. The width is not right because it is hardcoded in gvim (http://vim.1045645.n5.nabble.com/GTK-scrollbar-width-setting-with-X11-td1208194.html), but the steppers are not chopped off anymore.

    This is really nice and exactly what was missing to have a consistent look between gtk2 and gtk3!

    However I have 2 tiny comments.

    1. I personally feel the default size of the scrollbars waist a bit of space. Would it be possible to make the scrollbars a bit thinner? (or at least give the instructions on how to do it myself. in both gtk2 and gtk2)

    2. The look of buttons is currently different in gtk2 and gtk3 (e.g., when the button is focused). Not a biggie, but perhaps something for the future (if it is not already on your list). Or maybe even use another gtk engine, like equinox or aurora (which I personally think have some elements which would fit very nicely with default Adwaita)?

    Anyways, great work and thanks for sharing!

    To make scrollbars more narrow in GTK2, adjust GtkScrollbar::slider_width and GtkScrollbar::stepper_size. I'm not sure yet about GTK3.

    Aurora and Equinox are both very nice engines, but I would prefer to keep the number of engine dependencies to a minimum. The Moblin Netbook engine is also similar to Adwaita.

    Excellent work on the theme love it with Gnome-Shell and GTK3 apps. If you are looking for apps to tweak, pgAdmin3 is a little off for the tabs on the top. Not sure if its expecting an icon there or what but thought I'd mention.

    I'm really excited for this theme, but does it work with unity? Is there a specific way to install it? When I moved it into the .themes folder and applied it, it didn't seem to work right. Any help would be appreciated, I really want to get this theme working.

    I do not have Ubuntu installed right now, so I haven't tested Aldabra with Unity. I would be curious to know if it works.

    To install Aldabra, open a terminal and type "sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine gtk2-engines-pixbuf". Press enter and the required engines will be installed. Next, untar Aldabra to either $HOME/.themes or /usr/share/themes. Then, open gnome-appearance-properties (GNOME 2) or gnome-tweak-tool (GNOME 3) and select the "Aldabra" theme. That should do it. Please let me know if it still doesn't work.

    Hey thanks for the reply, the theme kind of works, some elements of it are slightly pixelated, especially the window borders, the panel also isn't themed to match Gnome3, then again I am using Unity. But overall it's a great theme thanks for making it, it looks really good!
