Description:

FAENZA-FRESH EXTENSION PACK
~Creating Faenza icons for EVERYTHING...

V0.2
16/06/2011
by tobias bernard

Official Announcement: http://tobias.bluestain.net/floss/faenza-fresh-0-2/

Have you ever installed a new, cool app and then discovered that there is no Faenza icon for it?
Probably yes.
This is why Faenza-Fresh exists. The goal of this extension set is to provide Faenza icons for anything the actual official icon pack doesn't include icons for and, if the official icon for something doesn't look good, provide a better one.
The long-term-goal is that these or similar icons get included in the official Faenza icon set, so that every application, device, action or whatever has a Faenza icon.

Faenza Fresh currently includes about 80 icons for applications, with many new icons (which Faenza doesn't include yet) such as Fontmatrix, Code::Blocks or Kompozer, but also many reworked Faenza icons such as Firefox, LibreOffice (well, not exactly; my Faenza Libreoffice icons existed before the official ones), Pidgin, Banshee or Inkscape.

INSTALLATION:

1) Personal (just for you): Copy the "Faenza-Fresh"-folder into the folder /home/yourname/.icons/
System (for every user): Copy the "Faenza-Fresh"-folder into the folder /usr/share/icons/

2) After that, use "Faenza-Fresh" instead of "Faenza" as your icon theme.

3) Enjoy your new icons!

By default, if Faenza-Cupertino (the blue Faenza folders) is installed, that folders are used. if you like the official ones better, change the "Inherits" in the index.theme. Just delete "Faenza-Cupertino" in that line.

If you use Faenza-Dark, add "Faenza-Dark" to the inherits line (example: Inherits=Faenza-Dark,Faenza,Humanity,Tango,gnome,hicolor,)

If one of your favourite apps doesn't have a Faenza icon, feel free to contact me, so maybe the next version will include it;)

Good work man! Just a note: if you change the "Inherits" in the index.theme from Faenza-cupertino to Faenza-Dark you can use the darker panel :D

Another note: can you use the newest firefox icon? http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TadE_CVQIXw/Sj9I5PDqa5I/AAAAAAAAEHk/7zA-vfi3IUw/s400/firefox-256.png
This has a ligher world in the top

thanks for your feedback!

i'll leave the "inherits" this way since everyone can customize it the way he wants. however, i added this to the description.

the problem with the new firefox logo is that i couldn't find an SVG logo. if you know where i can find one, please tell me...

Logged in just to reply to this:

http://svgicons.o7a.net/official/firefox.svg

But I couldn't find the latest version; shouldn’t be too hard to recreate it from this, though.

If you can make it more beautiful, please do.

Nice work, I love your comix and pidgin icon. Very nice indeed!

I wonder if you could make icons for some of my fave apps:
1. gvim
2. vbaexpress
3. chmsee
4. dosemu

Thank you!

 A nice start.

I like it, however, like the Faenza-Variants set, the icons don't fit in with the official set at certain sizes. I compared the MonoDevelop icons at 32px and 24px. 32px checked out, but 24px was wrong.

When I called out the same thing on Faenza-Variants, there was no response at all nor any effort to correct it. I would hope you would go the extra mile here to correct this.

Regardless, it's a nice start, and since I don't have a 24px panel anymore, I can go on using it.

There are 3 sizes of Faenza icons: normal (big), small and extra small. 48px and 32px icons are exports from the big icons, 24px and 22px from the small icons and 16px from the extra small ones.
however, the 16px, 22px and 24px application icons are used ONLY in gnome panels/menus, which will disappear from most gnome desktops within the next months, since both gnome shell and unity shell don't use them.
having this in mind it doesn't make much sense doing icons in 3 sizes if 2 of them probably won't be used by anyone.

so what i did is exporting the "big" icons to all png-sizes which causes the small discrepancies between my small icons and the official ones. this provides small-sized icons to gnome2-users, which aren't perfect but good enough to be used on the system.
i didn't check it, but i guess faenza-variants does the same.

i am probably not going to fix this because:
1) 99% of all users don't notice it
2) it would take me too much time which i can use to do icons for more applications
3) the small-sized application-icons will die with the gnome2 desktop

by the way, this problem is mentioned in the "known issues" in the "INFO.txt" (which nobody reads^^).

You're ignoring the entire demographic of non-GNOME users. What about people on XFCE, LXDE, even KDE? Or people without a DE at all?

first of all, here we are not talking about doing ANY small-sized icons but doing PERFECT small-sized icons.
so, there are already icons in any size which can be used for any purpose.
and since
1) gnome is the most popular DE
2) faenza is a GNOME icon theme
3) it is probable that other DEs will change their look too
i think it makes more sense to do icons for all major applications first and then worry about details.

but i promise you that, as soon as that target is reached, the first thing i will do is these small-sized icons:)
meanwhile, i invite you or anyone else to help me by doing the missing small- and extra-small-icons.

 ppa-repository??

hi Dear,

I like the faenza-Icons and your Icons. so my question or better idea would be: why not making an enlarged faenza-ppa-repository?? Or why not putting these Icons to the existing faenza-ppa-repository?? This would be nice for everyone...

Greetings
Karmicbastler

 Idea: talk to the maintainer

yes I konw, that you are not the maintainer of this ppa-repository. I just wanted to point you into the direction to talk to this maintainer. Perhaps you both can open up a cooperation.

Would this be an idea?? Then both of you could benefit from each other.

Perhaps you think about it. Or you open up an own ppa-repository on launchpad.

Greetings
Karmicbastler
