New Zoom KWin Effect
zoom

Downloads:  188
Submitted:  Apr 3 2011

Description:

Idea: Zoom Effect could be used to zoom specific user defined areas
(especially to read various content)

Current Problems:
1) User does not define the size of the zoomed area dynamically.
2) When I read I usually move the mouse from line to line
(are there any others? :))
3) When you read in a zoomed area there are many irrelevant
elements around that create disturbance

Proposed Solution:

Screen 1
-------------------------------
General Functionality

*)User After a Key Combination selects the desired area which
is going to be zoomed

*)After the selection, screen changes immediately to Screen2

Screen2
-------------------------------
*) Only the specified area is zoomed

*) The mouse does not move the specified area or better there is
two states support with MIDDLE MOUSE BUTTON TOGGLE,
(LOCKED STATE / UNLOCKED STATE)
LOCKED STATE: Mouse Does not move the zoomed area
UNLOCKED STATE: Mouse moves the zoomed area

*) There is a GwenView Style Fullscreen Bar which:
- Autohide
- Has an exit button
- Other buttons could be added in future releases
(e.g. Zoom more, Zoom less, Take Screenshot etc.)

Changelog:

v0.1

I think you're missing the point of zooming

As a visually impaired user, I know the importance of zooming.

Windows 7 has an excellent full-screen desktop zoom feature that allows one to use the mouse scrollwheel to zoom the entire desktop. The Mac has a similar mouse scrollwheel function. The Compiz Enhanced Desktop Zoom plugin is the closest Linux comes to that excellent funcitonality and it's a very credible alternative.

Keyboard-based zooming is archaic and passe at best. As a visually impaired user, I have to say that I'm quite sick and tired of interface designers who limit users such as myself to zooming methods that are this stunted. A full screen desktop zoom, mouse and Super Button controlled, is the only way to fly.

Instead of half-measures that zoom specific parts of the screen or limit the user to using keystrokes, the KDE dev team should be trying extremely hard to duplicate the Compiz button programmable Enhanced Desktop Zoom plugin as typified in Ubuntu 10.10.

The majors do it that way and they don't make money unless it's done right. The Open Source community had it right with Compiz and now seem to have, as they have on so many other initiatives (Gnome 3, unity), lost their way.

Please re-think this in the way I have described.
