Description:

I dislike wasting space by placing a menubar and the windowtilte above eah other, especially when we remember that widescreen monitors wich get more popular are limited just in the vertical space.

The solution of the globalmenu or mac-menu is disguisting since it only works well with click-to-focus, which I won\'t like to use, so combining them with the titlebar like the windws-itunes seems to be an interesting option.

I just gave my GTK-Theme a xwidth of 80px and used the free space to draw in the titlebuttons with enlightenment, so the pictures above are screenshots and no mockups.

But unlike the apple-software GTK won\'t let you move windows around by dragging in free space of the menu or toolbar, so I left a \"move\" area, which is the disadvantage of this idea for now, but it could e solved via GTK-module in the future.

The fact that my solutin is theme-dependent opens the neceseraty to create a script which modifies the users theme to have the esired xwidth in the menu and to create the window border from this or an user-supplied metacity-theme or picture.

The big advantage of this realization is that its completely a user choice, taking no freedom away from anyone.

I did this some time ago and the project is disfunct for now unil there may be some interest to it or I\'m in the mood and using e16 again.

Note, I did this with e16 as the WM, since I don\'t know any other wich is so configurable...

There is a download now, but the e16-theme is in draft state, its here just to show the feature, so expect graphical inconsistencys and the like.

 Nice, but...

Nice idea, but for some people would be desirable to have window titles (no matter where, maybe at the same level than the menu)

But the worst is that your resize handles are wasting all the space you gain by putting the menu above the window controls, so no advantage, and more confusion.

(of course with no resize handles or smaller ones, your solution becomes very interesting)

 True Solution

A true solution would be to get rid of the menubar, and have a true compact menu on the application's toolbar. Like what nautilus-elementary has done.

I know that this won't work for apps that have a lot of items in the menubar (office and photoshop-like apps), but it should be okay to leave them in their own menubar.

 Resizehandles

The size of the resizehandles is a matter of taste, I used a AmigaOS4-theme right before creating that one, so... (;

The true solution are dragabble toolbars and menus where you can arrange them menu and tollbar like you want them, for example in one row side by side.
And while there is a option to enable them most developers let their programms ignore this setting.
Thank you gnome-devs for advicing in your HIG to "not confuse users with freedom and configurabillity"...

Placing them to the right-click is an option too, look at RiscOS and the Rox-Desktop, even in the gimp (and it has a large menu) you can turn to this, it works very well.
But thats Off-topic.

There' a download now.

Sorry, i forget this, we could write the titles into the move-area, but it would be fixed width (the 80px in my example).
I thougth of this too.

Good job man, i like it and it would be better adding the window title and wrapping app menu if it's bigger than the windows lenght, but there is no much space in title bar for all that, don't you think?
