NOTE:

Unfortunately, after years of Gnome3, even minor updates of GTK+ or Gnome-Shell break themes and waste hours of work.


GnomishBeige is a clean beige theme for GTK3, plus a matching GTK2 theme that depends on the latest Murrine and Pixmap engines.

*** Current Dependencies ***

GTK3 = 3.12.X (works with 3.10 and maybe with 3.8 too)
gtk2-engines-murrine >= 0.98.1.1 (for GTK2)
gtk2-engines-pixbuf >= 2.24.10 (for GTK2)
Metacity >= 2.34 (for GTK2)

*** Notes ***

1) Ubuntu users should remove the package(s) "overlay-scrollbar" if they see blackened widget areas or if they just want to have the default scrollbars. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/overlay-scrollbar/+bug/1064147

2) Please take a look at the file "README" in the theme folder for a tip on Epiphany.

3) You won't need the source package unless you want to modify the theme or make a deb or an rpm package from it.

i ve been using your theme for some time and i should say its pleasing...
can you make the gnome shell top panel have the adwaita look ? (side reverse curves) transparency to take up the back ground wallpaper color to give the matching effect ? just a suggestion...

your themes looks gr8 man.. (have used your gtk2 during maverick days too ..

Yes, I could make the panel have curved sides but I didn't find that pleasing with the gradient I gave it. If you want curved sides, take a look at the ".panel-corner" blocks in the CSS file of the default theme ('/usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/gnome-shell.css' with most standard installations) and add a similar block to the "gnome-shell.css" file of GnomishBeige. Especially You have to play with the parameter "-panel-corner-background-color". Play with other parameters too and see if it's pleasing to your eyes.

As for transparency, I love it :) I'm even looking forward to the implementation of optional widget transparency in GTK3 -- something better than Murrine in GTK2. However, The problem with GNOME-Shell is that, unlike Compiz, it doesn't support blurring of translucent areas yet. Without this capability, transparency could be an obstacle to readability. As I prefer usability to beauty, I avoided transparency except for the activities overview, which makes the screen dark enough.

Hello,

Thanks for this theme. Everything works fine, but the menu colors for the GTK3 applications like Evince is blueish instead of greyish like for the GTK2 applications.

It would be nice to have something homogeneous here.

I haven't used blue at all. All GTK3 menus are dark brown with a mild gradient, as in the screenshot. Could you please show me a screenshot of those "blueish" menu colors?

That's strange and, at the same time, interesting. Let's see what might have made your menus have that color.

(1) Do you see that menu color only in Evince or everywhere?

(2) Do you have GTK+-3.2?

(3) Does Openbox have any color customization tool you might have used to change some colors?

(4) Are the menu colors distorted also in GNOME Fallback mode or GNOME-Shell?

- Seems to be related to GTK3 apps only, same issue with File Roller and Seahorse. GTK2 apps have a dark grey menu.

- Yes, v3.2

Out of curiosity, I installed Openbox-3.4.11.2 in my Debian. All the menus are as in GNOME, i.e. the GTK2 menus are dark brown and the GTK3 ones have an extra mild gradient. See here:

Unfortunately, I have no idea why the menu colors are changed in your case. Please tell me if you find the cause.

I can reproduce it under GNOME-SHELL on a ubuntu 11.10 live-CD.

BTW, only this theme has the menu color issue, adwaita theme and others work well.

OK. I think I've found a clue now. Please download the following archive, extract it, and replace the file "gtk.css" from the theme with it. Then log out and log in and see if the issue is solved.

Thank YOU for your patience and cooperation. The problem was that some systems don't pick up colors directly from the file "settings.ini". I'll update the theme soon after making some other changes too.

There are only three instances of this font in gnome-shell.css, and only one of them, in the "#panel" block, is related to Panel. You could comment it out.

BTW, I'll update the theme soon to support gnome-sushi.

Thanks for info... Tried, substituted with Cantarell, but bold in this font is too large for the panel, and I'm too lazy (and unknowledgeable) to start figuring out which other font to use and/or which bold entries to change. In the meantime, I'll stick with your setup (which, in its entirety, is quite a nice one).

You could also comment out "font-weight: bold;" in the blocks "#panelLeft, #panelRight" and "#panelCenter" to see if your chosen font fits well.

Bonjour,

J'ai vraiment été séduit par Gnomishbeige. A mon avis, il est très proche d'Ubuntu : doux et harmonieux.
Faute de pouvoir continuer avec Bisigi Project, (hélas), je me suis dirigé vers Gnome-Look ou j'ai découvert votre thème que j'utilise sous Ubuntu 11.10-64 bits (Gnome shell).

Nice screenshot! I'm just curious why your titlebars aren't that of GnomishBeige although you've set them to be so. Perhaps you should log out and log in for that to take effect.

And why is a vertical bar is shown on the switches (of Advanced Settings) instead of the word "On"?

Unfortunately, although I can read French, I can't write in French and I don't trust "Google Translate" for writing ;) Just look at my screenshot and compare the appearance of the window "Advanced Settings" with yours.


In your screenshot, you'd asked how you could modify the clock font. Open 'GnomishBeige/gnome-shell/gnome-shell.css' with gEdit and search for "#panelCenter" (without quotes). In the block "#panelCenter", you could remove the lines related to "font-weight" and/or "font-style". To change the Panel font itself, search for "#panel {", and in its block, change "Bitstream Charter" to whatever font you like. Then restart the shell.

Go to the folder where you've installed GnomishBeige, then in its sub-folder gnome-shell, you'll find the file "gnome-shell.css".

I don't have Ubuntu. Test whatever font you want. However, you should restart Gnome-Shell to see the effect (or log out and log in).

hi dear,

on your screenshots, this theme looks beautiful. But could you also make these scrollhandles in a brown color instead of this metal-silver??

And another request would be, if you did a sandcolor-version too?? And could this sandcolor-version have also the menues in a more sandcolor-version??
This would fit my ny Gnome-shell-theme perfectly, which I had called fresh-Wood shelltheme. This theme really looks so elegant...I like it.

Hello!

First, thanks for your comment. Please tell me if your scrollbar sliders (handles) don't have the same color and gradient as in the screenshot because that would point to a bug somewhere.

As for colors, tastes are different. For example, I prefer not to have too many brown bars in the theme because I want it to be as "clean" as possible, but if you like brown scrollbar handles, you could tweak their color and gradient at lines 644 and 657 of "gtk-widgets.css"; just replace "@theme_bg_color" with a color of your choice (in the form of #ffffff).

The same thing can be easily done with the beige. Just put another color (sand color, for example) instead of "#efebe7" in front of "bg_color" in both "gtk.css" and "settings.ini" (only one place for each file). Play with it until you're satisfied with the new look :)
