Description:

(the screenshots are from version 0.0.5)
Please note this is a development version of PlaybaK, you may see a lot of bugs and there are missing a lot of basic features like repeat or aspect ratio.
The idea of creating PlaybaK was based upon a mockup created by menace1982 that you can see here: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/A+Media+Player+for+KDE4?content=94472
PlaybaK is (or will be) a combination of the best functions of several multimedia players and is capable of playing music and videos (soon CDs, DVDs and photos). It is able to distinguish different types of videos (music videos, TV shows, movies, personal videos,...) but it still has some bugs. PlaybaK allows you to read the song\'s lyrics (soon it will fetch the lyrics and timed lyrics if available) and also allows you to know more about the singers with a brief search made by PlaybaK itself.

Certain basic functions are not available yet. As an example, for now, there are no visualizations due to Phonon\'s limitations.
A further development of PlaybaK will depend on everyone\'s opinion on it. Therefore, it would be appreciated if you commented below, reporting opinions, problems, suggestions...

We hope you will enjoy KDE Media Player.

How to add timed lyrics
1. Search the lyrics
2. Open the music on KDE Media Player
3. Right click the music in the playlist and click "Edit lyrics..."
4. Paste the lyrics you found.
Hard way:
5. Do the same for each line: move the cursor to the line, set its time
Easier way:
5. Click "Save", play the music and press record button located in the middle top box (you should see the lyrics on it, if you don't, double click the song).
6. Click the bottom of the box when someone says the next line.
7. Click save button once you're done
8. Disable record mode pressing the button again
9. Double click the music in the playlist and enjoy
(later it will be possible to download timed lyrics)

Coming features on next version (0.0.8)
- Subtitles support
- Costumization
- Album cover fetch
- Better Nepomuk integration (if possible)
- Better collection (including artist/album/track editors)
- Brazilian Portuguese language

Changelog:

April 11, 2010
Source code was released
I'm new in KDE and QT programming, my program has some weird, useless or bad code. I used a KDevelop template to start programming KDE Media Player. I would like if someone could make DEB and RPM packages.
May 8, 2010
KDE Media Player 0.0.6 released
- Collection - up to now it can look for files and organize them by itself, you can't manage the files yet and it might not show some found musics it found.
- Improved multimedia information - KDE Media Player saves the picture of the artist so it won't donload it all the time and it can also be shown in other places like system tray's icon tooltip
- Czech and Portuguese(European) languages available (French comming soon) - media information page will look for information in your language (Czech or Portuguese)
- Some bug fixes (lyrics editor now works)
- All options in setting's general page now work
May 20, 2010
Added a poll about the name of KDE Media Player
http://www.twiigs.com/poll/Technology/Computers/55242
June 8, 2010
Closed old poll and created a new one for the names PlaybaK and KoolPlayer
http://www.twiigs.com/poll/Technology/Computers/56264
July 11, 2010
PlaybaK 0.0.7 released
- New name and icon (thanks to menace1982)
- Collection improvements: no more SQL, it now uses simple text files; it is now possible to update the collection; some people couldn't have collection working because they had a lot of files, it should be fixed now
- Compact mode (it isn't that compact yet)
- Video area isn't black anymore while playing songs: It let's you rate your songs and suggests you other songs to listen to
- Nepomuk integration (unfortunately my desktop got broken and I can't make Nepomuk work on my laptop so Nepomuk integration can have some bugs and isn't complete yet)
- Added some basic features like repeat and random
- Available in: Czech, English, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian
- Bug fixes

Really cool media player and finally some start to work on that owesome mockup! Find this promissing!
But the file you provide in the download section is a 64bit executable one,which dose not work on my 32bit machine.So would you just release the source or a 32bit execute?

No Source and no license ? You can't say it has no license, but btw you're linking against kdelibs so >> LGPL or GPL would fit !

Sorry, I had some problems understanding the licenses, that's why the source code wasn't released. But now I solved the problem and source code is available.
(btw, I don't know a lot programming, all the source code can be really bad)

Thanks for the licensing under GPL :)

Btw if bad code is present, with the source code available, a few people will surely review the code and help to correct if necessary.

 Some improvements

 by cjann on: Apr 11 2010

Score 50%

Really nice! With a lot of potential. Phonon really needs visualizations, I'm also waiting a long time for visualizations for Amarok.

It won't build under Fedora 12 KDE 4.4.2:
http://pastebin.ca/1859263

But after changing the following includes it compiles just fine:
//#include <qt4/QtCore/QModelIndex>
#include <QModelIndex>

//#include <qt4/QtGui/QMainWindow>
#include <QMainWindow>

//#include <qt4/QtGui/QWidget>
#include <QWidget>

//#include <qt4/QtGui/QScrollArea>
#include <QScrollArea>

//#include <Phonon/effect.h>
#include <Phonon/Effect>

//#include <Phonon/SubtitleDescription>

Now only some icons are missing: icons/kmpadd.png icons/kmpremove.png icons/kmpfullscreen.png icons/kmpfullwindow.png icons/kmpsound.png

for example:
replace: BaddMedia->setIcon(KIcon("/share/apps/kmp/icons/kmpadd.png"));
with:
#include <KstandardDirs>
BAddMedia->setIcon(KIcon(KStandardDirs::locate("data", "kmp/icons/kmpadd.png")));

now the icon is found

Really just a little thing, include a top directory when creating the tar.gz, it's annoying to decompress and have to fight to find the files when the directory is yet populated.

(Don't know if I'm clear ^^)

Yeah, I understood, sorry.
I usually right click the file and select "extract here with sub folder auto detection" (I don't know if it's written that way in English).
I'll solve all these problems soon.

Thank you for your comment.
Should I change all the other includes like #include <phonon/videowidget.h> and #include <phonon/backendcapabilities.h> for example or the problem was only with the ones you referred?
About the icons, when I did that it didn't find the icons (I'm testing on Kubuntu), I guess the problem is in the makefiles...

yes
> About the icons, when I did that it didn't find the icons (I'm testing on Kubuntu), I guess the problem is in the makefiles...

maybe some issues with the data install dir but I'm no expert

maybe add:
BAddMedia->setIcon(KIcon(KStandardDirs::locate("data", "kmp/icons/kmpadd.png")));
kDebug()<<KStandardDirs::locate("data", "kmp/icons/kmpadd.png");

which prints "kmp(3417) KMP_Base::SetupWindow: "/usr/local/share/apps/kmp/icons/kmpadd.png"" on my machine to the console

you can run kdebugdialog to enable debug output within your app

 Repository

I don't want to seem rude, but I havn't found a nice way to ask...

Could you consider putting your code in a public GIT repository, since it's OpenSource now?
Something like http://gitorious.org/ or http://github.com/ ?

That could speed up development, and would allow others to view the source code, help you impriving the application on a daily base, and help you with design mistakes and the "bad code" which could be in.

Ability is nothing without opportunity.

Maybe that's a good idea but I'm afraid if then people change the code too much so I'll get lost. As I said before, I don't know a lot about programming. If I saw, for example, Amarok's source code I wouldn't understand anything. So if people change it too much I won't be able to program it and it's like it wasn't mine anymore (because I wouldn't program it anymore). The other problem is I'm afraid if people do some things that I already have an idea how to do, then I won't use my ideas because someone already did that.
I understand GIT is good but I don't know how it would be then...
(btw, could I access GIT repository using a file manager like I do with FTP?)

Hello,

maybe you can join forces with the Bangarang media player (http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Bangarang?content=113305), both projects seems very similar to me.

No way, Bangarang is so different!!!
I really like kde media player, it's really practical, though it is still under development. I think, as it was said, kdemp is better than kaffeine, and joining forces with Bangarang would be a terrible loss for kdemp. So, congrats, gilfcp10!

not sure if bangarang and kde media player together will work.
i got a problem with this media player, i got a bug when i clicked on lyrics. does this happen because the function is not avaliable yet?
i do think it is better than those players that usually come with any linux. at least, this one didnt need any extra codecs or packages and i work well with unstable versions.
could you please answer me soon? thanks.

Thanks for the compliment and for talking about the bug.
Lyrics are not completely done and still buggy but what you saw on screenshots are already available.
Did you try using the steps I wrote in the description on this page?
How did you get that bug? Did it close?
About codecs, even if there are missing codecs, I'll add something (but not now, it will be available maybe in months) that installs (or helps the user install) missing codecs.

I don't know... It depends on how that joint is made.
btw, I don't mean I don't like Bangarang, it is a good player. It's just I don't think they are similar and there are somethings on KDE Media Player that I don't want to change.

Sure, I don't know Bangarang well and KMP only from the description, so maybe the similarities are only superficially. As I'm no coder, I have no idea whether sharing code for some basic things well be useful.
