It's not currently possible and would need an entire rewrite of the GTK libraries. I believe that basically an RGBA colourmap needs to be enabled a core level for rounded-corners in menus to become reality.

It is already possible with murrine engine (in some themes) and apps that support rgba.

I tried to bring this idea to life by editing the menubg of an existing pixmap theme. But to no avail. Gnome subsituted transparency with white colour........

Could you tell me more about rgba.....

That's because the version of Murrine engine installed by default in Ubuntu doesn't support RGBA, I think...
I'll look for a version that does, I think it can be found somewhere - I'll post here if I find it.
Can you tell me how you made the white-rounded corners?

Sorry, how do you set that menubg stuff in Murrine? (I'm a theming n00b) - Or, is there some simple and exaustive manual or guide around? With all the options etc. explained?

I totally agree, rounded cornered menus look a lot better than the current ones.
About RGBA support I heard Ubuntu was going to include it with 10.04 but then it was postposed to 10.10. Maybe the Gnome Team could make this possible now that they are working in Gnome 3...
